Lorrha/Ballyquirk - Smith/Darcy
« on: Sunday 05 April 15 21:45 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I'm looking for any information that people might be able to provide on my great grandparents, John Smith from Lorrha and Mary Darcy just down the road at Ballyquirk. John was born about 1844 and Mary in about 1846. John arrived in Austrlia in 1865 and Mary a year later in 1866.

Thanking you in advance for any help,

Cheers,
Mario

Annclare,

They married in Australia in 1866 in a town called Braidwood in New South Wales. I've since discovered that John's parents' names were George and Catherine and Mary's were James and Catherine.

Also, if it helps, John was sponsored to Australia by a Michael  Cahalan who was originally from Abbeyville near Lorrha.

Cheers,
Mario

For the given details, RootsIreland has a potential baptism for Mary. The website's subscription arrangements are only VFM if you are viewing multiple records.

Do you have an occupation for George ?

Hi,
Also, John Smith was Mary Darcy's cousin.
In 1999 I spoke to a chap in Borrisokane, Francie Darcy, passed on now, he was telling me about his family going to Australia in the late 1800's. He was asking me about my cousin who went in the 1970's that's how we got into conversation.
They must have been 3rd cousins.

Tara, The only records I have are those which are from John's arrival in Australia. His parents are listed as "Geo + Cath - both dead". From this I'm working on his parents being called George and Catherine and they died some time before 1865. I don't have any occupation for George but I do know that John and Mary were both Catholic.

Maggsie, I too was aware of the family connection (this was noted on some arrival information for Mary  as John was her sponsor) between John and Mary and hence my desire to find just at what stage they were cousins. It is fantastic to see that in 1999 John & Mary were still known of in Ireland! Although Francis Darcy has now died, do you know what his relationship was with Mary and if he has any other relations in the area of Borrisokane? As for the 3rd cousins - I'm assuming this means John & Mary shared a great great grandparent - is this information that Francis passed on? Would you be able to PM with any information or leads that you might have on this?

As an aside, the Darcy name is still carried on in our family through the use as a middle name. The most famous of these descendants would be my mother's first cousin - Cardinal James Darcy Freeman who was an Australian cardinal from 1973 until his death in 1991. Mary was the cardinal's grandmother and from my investigations I am almost certain that James was also Mary's father's name.

Thanks once again Tara and Maggsie for your help,

Cheers,
Mario
