Thanks for the additional info from Geoff and Trish, interesting that Riley changed his name from birch to smith, wonder what prompted that?

Mary Ann should be with him in the 1861 census but perhaps his travelling means that she is somewhere else

So no baptism for Mary Ann and a child born 1852 and 1854 - doesn't leave much room for her if she was born 1853.

Her birth could be under Smith?
There is one in Grantham Jun 1853 but  :-\

Grantham covers Welby as well.

changing tack tree has her born 1850 so

which covers Thorney which seems to figure in the earlier baptisms

Both the 1871, 1881 censuses (and 1891, found him in Heckington) say Thorney, Cambridgeshire which is quite another place.
