Looking for information on William Bateman
« on: Monday 06 April 15 13:06 BST (UK) »

I am looking for information about the birth/baptism and the parents of William Bateman, who was buried on the 14th Jan. 1798 at All Saints, Kingston on Thames, and also about his wife Elizabeth.

I believe that William must have lived in Kingston, at least, from before April 1777, when his daughter, Sarah, was baptised, probably until his death.  When he was buried, William was said to have been a blacksmith.

I have discovered nothing about his marriage but I wonder whether his wife, Elizabeth, was Elizabeth Nutt, possibly connected with the Nutt family of  Long Ditton, since one of their children was christened Mary Nut.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Is there an age given on his burial?

Did he have children before the Sarah in Kingston?

William's burial is on FreeREG, and his daughter Mary Nut Bateman's burial is also on there for the 24th October 1785.
regards.

Thank you for your replies.  There do not seem to have been any other children baptised in Kingston before 1777.  All those that I have found have the mother's name recorded, either as Elizabeth or Bettey, nor are there any children with just the father, William.  Unfortunately, the records of William's burial do not give his age.  If William was a blacksmith, there is a fair chance that he was apprenticed somewhere and I believe that one of the conditions was that the apprentice did not marry.  If he was indeed married shortly before Sarah's birth, say c.1775, he could have been born in about 1750 or before.
