thank you for that info keyboard :) I knew who George jnr and ethel had married, but the other info is priceless to me as I was starting to come up against a few walls....the Station hotel is a new lead for me, and I find it really interesting to see Ethel being at boarding school.

The Smitheyman side of things have been quite easy to trace back, but the Hearses have thrown up a few anomalies which are both a headache and a joy. I would really like to thank you for your kindness and efforts keyboard.

Hearse - Yorkshire
Smitheyman - Yorkshire
Anderson - Edinburgh
Fortune - Midlands
Porteous - Lothian
Moore - Glasgow/Dunoon
Boyd - Glasgow

Hi again, was having a bit of trouble locating anything prior than the 1871 for George Hearse, hopefully this is him:-

1851 Census

Michael Durston 42 occ Toll Collector b Huntspill, Somerset
Ellen 43 occ Governess b Mark
George HARSE 23 occ Fireman b Mark
James Harse 19 occ Fireman b Mark
Residing at Rhymney Gate, Llangunider, Crickhowell, Breconshire
Census Ref HO107/2490/61/17
1841/61 for Michael & Ellen/Eleanor RG09/1669/31/10 HO107/946/17/45/1

Marriage Michael Durston Grooms parish Huntspill to ALLEN Melly 13th April 1830 Place Mark

Baptisms:-

George HARSE 15th March 1828 Mark, Somerset Father John Mother Elizabeth
James Arthur Harse 23rd March 1832 Mark, Somerset Father John Mother Elizabeth
Henry Allen Harse 26th December 1825 Mark, Somerset Father John Mother Elizabeth
Gabriel Harse 20th July 1834 Mark, Somerset Father John Mother Elizabeth
Jane Harse 22nd December 1829  Mark, Somerset Father John Warner? Mother Elizabeth
Marriage John Harse to Elizabeth Allen 27th December 1823 Mark, Somerset

Their is a Henry Allen HOUSE on census b Mark, but with different parentage?
Looking into if the Durston/Melly families have any connection to the Harse/Hearse family?

Also have updated my previous post with further information for you!

Hi,
Do you have a subscription to FindMyPast or Newspaper archives? There are a lot of reports on George Hearse. He was a councillor on the North West Ward of Middlesbrough for many years. Could this perhaps be the rumour of a family member being the Mayor.  He owned the Prince of Wales Theatre in M'bro and so many other hotels both there and also Redcar.

keyboard, you have managed to find more than I have as I couldn't get much further back with the Hearses, but the spelling change could be the reason so ill check out what you have supplied - I soooo owe you a pint! ;) I originally really wanted to research back because I am trying to find if any of my ancestors were at Waterloo (I worked on the w200 official publication), and was getting frustrated at being a generation short so your help is invaluable.

Middlesbrough, I have a find my past membership so maybe im just looking in the wrong places on the site. The Redcar connection makes sense as that's where my Gt Grandma was born, but I wonder if there is some kind of list of all the licensed premises George owned as I only have a few on my list so far. I didn't know about the theatre so that's super interesting :)

I would love to buy one of his former places to bring it back into the family. I was in Newcastle yesterday doing my course and exam to get my English personal license (My Scottish one isint transferable), and part of me was hoping i would be making him proud. Sad i know lol!

Thank you everyone for your invaluable help...means a lot x

PS a lot of the information I located was tweeking the surname on Family Search!

Another tree tells me James Arthur b 1832 was James Allen, John the father was a Farmer.

If the 1891 entry from Guisborough is correct I'm wondering if the Newport/Monmouthshire connection may be a red herring, given this from 29 June 1877

HARSE.-on the 29th inst, at the residence of his brother 83 Commercial-street, Newport, after a short illness, Mr. George Harse, aged 52 years

Hi Mabel, are you referring to the 1891 census for George snr as he is definitely alive 1901?
Keyboard

PS OK can see what you mean re 1881which is Newport Road, Middlesbrough I think!

If you can locate James 1832 from 1851 or Mary A 1824 who is 17 in 1841 in East Mark Street H0107/932/ 5/8 / 9
Would be great!
