Reuben Chapman. India
« on: Tuesday 07 April 15 07:39 BST (UK) »
Looking for details for Reuben Chapman born 1898 Ecclesfield Yorkshire. He must have been serving in India because he married a Minnie Fairest 1920 Peshawar, Bengal, India. I's possible his service number was 57065 West Yorkshire Regiment. Any help appreciated.

Regards
David

When he married his father was listed on the marriage entry in the IGI as Isacc Chapman.
Minnie Fairests father was listed as Federick William Fairest.
Frederick William Fairest IGI birth registration 1861, Wortley, Yorkshire, England

WW1 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. They married in 1920. It might be possible that his father was living in India (could have been a soldier or a public servant) and Rueben Chapman was called up for service because he was a british subject and he had returned home after the war.

For 3 pounds 30 - you can get his medal card and this will tell you where the Rueben Chapman  57065 West Yorkshire Regiment served. It will tell you his first theatre of war.

The medal card is also viewable on a well known subscription service - indexed as Renben Chapman. There is very little information on it.

Per the 1920 marriage register transcription he was a serving soldier aged 21 - a lance corporal in 2 Batt. West Yorks.  So his records may still be with the MoD and you can apply for a search.

Hi, Just wondered if you had any luck with your search? My grandfather, William Buckley, served with the 1st West Yorkshire Regiment, no. 57137, in Belgium/France and then in India, Bangalore 1919 and Peshawar 1921. I think I might need to contact MOD for his records. I have found his medal card but there is no other information on it and his service records are nowhere to be found. Thanks, Heather

Heather  The date of his service makes it all but certain that his records are with MOD.  Medal cards were stored separately form the detailed records, 70% of which were lost in the WW2 bombings.

Below are the Buckley W records of men born before 1901 held by MoD. A likely candidate for your grandfather is going to be 4540664 with a birth date (right hand column) of 13 7 1891. Hopefully you may have info re his birth that will clinch it.

To clarify  4540664 is the post 1920 number for a Parkin W of that date of birth

The number is in the block allocated to W Yorks Regt  which was 4523001 to 4601000
See  http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/new-british-army-numbers-issued-in-1920/

and scroll down.

The only downside I can see is that 4540664 does seem to be quite a high number in that block for someone who might have been given the number in 1920 (i.e the 27, 663th number) but I have no information about how that particular Regiment allocated their numbers post war.
