Furmston's of Chirk, which one is right?
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 10:46 BST (UK) »
Mods, I hope this is in the right place, if not feel free to move it.

Sarah Ann Furmston married Arthur Prentice in 1902 in Birmingham. I have the marriage certificate.

After the marriage I have census for 1911, various Birmingham electoral rolls, re-marriage and death index. In most of these documents Sara Ann is referred to as "Annie".

Here is my problem..........

Sarah Ann's father on the marriage cert is William Furmston (and she is listed as age 22), and her place of birth in all later documents is abt. 1880, Chirk, Denbighshire.

I have found a baptism record that I though was correct for Annie Furmston, born 27/04/1880 and Baptized 30/05/1880 in Chirk, Father William, mother's first name Ellen, BUT there is also a baptism for Sarah Anne Furmston, born 28/10/1875 and baptized 12/11/1875 in Chirk, Father William and mother Ellen.

I have a marriage for William Furmston and Ellen Elizabeth Povey 15/02/1873 in Chirk.

So my question is did Arthur marry Annie or Sarah Ann, was she confused about who she was, are those the correct parents?

What do you all think?

Thanks Trish1120

So Sarah Ann was born between William and Lily but died as an infant, and Annie came later.

Now I am armed with further info I will try again to locate a birth index as I would love to know if she was also registered as Sarah Ann but known as Annie (otherwise why would her marriage certificate have Sarah Ann and not just Annie)

Was the servant in the Griffiths household the 1891 census, making her age 11? was that usual at that time?

I have her in 1901 thank you.

Unfortutely it was not unusual to be out working at 11.
William was Widowed and had a lot of mouths to feed.

She may just be Annie but preferred Sarah Ann as her name.

Yes, Reg as Annie June 1880 Oswestry

Off to bed,
Trish :)
