Shaw Agnew
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 14:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm researching the Agnew line of my family tree and it has taken me to Kilkeel. I have an ancestor named Rachel Agnew b.abt 1864 and whose parents I believe to be Shaw Agnew (b.abt 1817, d.1879 Ireland.) and Eliza Newell.

Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911
Rachel Agnew
Father   Shaw Agnew
Mother   Eliza Newell
Birth   19 Aug 1864 - Kilkeel, Down, Ireland

Apart from the above and the Griffiths evaluation I can't find any sign of a Shaw Agnew until the record of his death. I am struggling to move this line any further back. Would anyone be able to find anything else on Shaw or who his parents were please?
Thankyou in advance

Thankyou, would they use a mothers maiden name in the birth record? I cannot find a record of their marriage, would you suggest this is because it is early to mid 18th century?

Not sure I understand your last post but the mother of both Rachel and Ellen is called Elizabeth Newell.

Have you tried searching for marriages with the name Elizabeth Newell? (there are a few in the Kilkeel district)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Griffiths valuation comes with the primary valuation done in 1863 if you want more than index entries you need http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/  which reproduces the book entry and has maps!!  Showing homesteads then thereafter the PRONI extends the valuation and will cover up to about 1921, it should show who took over Shaws homestead at the time of his death .

My broadband is acting up tonight but I am used to getting more clues from clumps of family name as you have surrounding Shaw who must be relatives in 1863.

In the 1901 census you have 33 Agnews living in the DED Mullarton including a John
Agnew   John   94   Male   Head of Family   Presbyterian   County Down   Farmer   Read   -   Widower living with sons and daughters at 21 in Moneydorraghmore Upper (Mullarton, Down)  also several Elizabeths one of whom could be the widow of Shaw?
So I am closing down, hope some of this moves you on abit JimG

Thankyou so much, My family come from Hull, Yorkshire and I think Rachel Agnew and Ellen Agnew both move to York as I found them both there.
I will look into the information you found as it all seems very plausible. Thank you so much for your help.

I had quick look again this morning, Shaw Agnew lived on the remote edge of stone walled fields about over 750 feet above sea level along the edge of fields which run into the higher heather clad slopes of the Mourne Mountains, in particular Rocky mountain whose summit was to the NE of where they lived.

You also have a possible connection back to 1690 where Alexander AGNEW Kilkeel in the 1690s & 1715, leased Moneydarraghmore townland with John Kennedy & Pat McNight for £7.10.0 from Lord Nicholas Bagenal   BMR; MO 5/8/2009 p6 source http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/A/AbAg.htm#ag

I didnt find Shaw's marriage on familysearch, ancestryireland or Emerald ancestors
Have fun and visit the area JimG

Thankyou so much for all your help. I showed what I've found so far to my mum (who's the original Agnew) and she has found it very interesting. All good fun. Many thanks.
