Western Australia: William HUMBER, born 1833, Leicester, England
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 14:33 BST (UK) »
Hello,

William HUMBER was transported to WA aboard the "Pyrenees", arriving Fremantle on the 28/06/1851.

Other than being fined for being a drunkard (Perth Gazette, 04/05/1860) and reported as being a prosecutor, having his bundle stolen, in that same paper, I can find no details for him EXCEPT the Northern Courier published on the 22/02/1916 states under the heading PROBATE JURISDICTION that a William HUMBER died on 22/12/1915.   Apparently he was a farmer from Mugga Muggin, Wongamine.   Could this be the same person ::)

Can anyone help please??

For the moment,

Hello Gerry and thank you,

I only ever visited WA (Fremantle) once via "Fair Sky" many years ago, so geographically my knowledge is a little unsound, but are the three places relatively close and could the person mentioned be the same person?   It is a pity there are no ages specified......in 1895 he would have been 62 and 1900 67.

For now,

BAC3,

I see no William Humber on the 'Pyrenees' of that date but there is a William Hunter No: 605, aged 16.
In fact I see no convict of the name Humber in W.A.

Did he change his name?

warncoort and John Bell,

The records for William HUMBER's transportation are rather like brown's cows, all over the place, except the Australian Convict Transportation Registers - Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868 do confirm he sailed aboard the "Pyrenees" on 14/03/1851.  I agree Fremantle Prison and other sources do not contain his name BUT the most important aspect is that TROVE, as under, agrees he is very much a former convict ("expiree") living, and drinking (!!), in WA:

BC3.

Because of his young age I had a look through the list off Parkhurst Boys to see if any were on the Pyrenees. There were 29 on board, including;

William Hunter.
Age: 16. Term: 7  years. Trial place: 9.3.1848. Offence: stealing cheese.
Comments: aka (also known as): Humber. 14 years old at trial.

Physical description of convicts on the Pyrenees.
William Hunter: No 605.
Occupation: labourer. Single. Height: 5’3”. Hair: like Brown. Eyes: Hazel. Face: round. Complexion: fresh. Build: Stout. Distinguishing marks: none.

It would appear that William Hunter and William Humber were in fact the same person.

The Parkhurst Prison Register has an entry for William HUMBER not HUNTER ......The National Archives HO24/15, p.84.......as do newspaper reports of his earlier criminality with his brother James, who was also sentenced to transportation, but this was commuted to being a Ticket-of-Leave.

TROVE containing the reference I gave previously definitely has William HUMBER as an "Expiree" and therefore I am not especially worried about the fact he reached Australia.   My main concern is to discover any personal details after transportation, hoping against hope, for instance, that ages could be attached to the names that Aussie1947 unearthed.

William Hunter (aka Humber) was 14 years old in 1848 at trial.  Thus born c1834.
William Humber was 80 when he died in 1915 at Wongamine.    Thus born c1835.

As an aid to discovering other details regarding William, the authorities would probably have had him recorded as Hunter as per his arrival in W.A so it is prudent to look for him under Hunter as well as Humber in his early years in the Colony.

This record ties your man to Wongamine!

Hunter, William. Born in 1835, died 12.1915. (Expiree). Arrived per Pyrenees 28.6.1851. Employed a ticket of leave man at Wanneroo 1854. Wongamine-Toodyay, RC.
