James Wilkie death certificate
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 20:31 BST (UK) »
I need help finding the death certificate of James Wilkie, my third great grandfather. He was born in County Tyrone around 1822-1826 and married Mary Morrow/Murray in 1845 in Dromore. He subsequently moved with his family to Glasgow and they can be found in Anderston in 1861. His wife Mary died in 1875 in Bonhill, Dumbarton. His son William married in 1885 and James was still alive at this point. I've had trouble trying to locate his death certificate, which I hope to find so that I can see the names of his parents. He is variously described as having been a 'colliery labourer', a 'carter/garter' (couldn't read it) and some other profession I cannot read on the document. I would be happy to share any other info with someone kind enough to assist me in this endeavour.

Have you checked for his death record on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Between 1885 - 1900 there were 7 recorded in Scotland for James born 1824 +/- 2 years.
None in Dunbartonshire, 2 in Lanarkshire others elsewhere.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi

Have you found him on any other census apart from 1861? That might help to narrow down where he was living and if he was still alive  after the marriage of his son.

Just adding another question to those already made. When wife Mary died in 1875, did she shows as 'married to' James Wilkie?

Have you got a census for Mary Wilkie in 1871 in Scotland? If so, there should also be a reference to her marital status on her census entry.

Is this the family here that you have in 1861?:

James Wilkie 33 carton (carter likely) b. Ireland
Mary Wilkie 31 b. Ireland
David Wilkie 13 b. Ireland
Isabella Wilkie 9 b. Ireland
Matilda Wilkie 6 b. Cardross, Dumbartonshire...can't see this on family search
Mary Wilkie 5 b. Cardross, Dumbartonshire...can't see this on family search
William Wilkie 3 b. Cardross, Dumbartonshire https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYTB-PXX
Address: 107 Stobcross, Glasgow/Anderston

Puzzled by these 1860 entries. Same parents? Triplets? Maybe they didn't survive as they don't seem to show on the family's 1861 entry:

Sarah 1860 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYPH-M68
Jean 1860 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYP4-BSC
Margaret 1860 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYP4-1V8

Have you checked these further births, to help you narrow down death dates for father James:

Margaret 1862 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQWY-DL4
Helen 1865 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQQV-796 twin
Jane 1865 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQW6-L4M twin
Sarah 1867 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQW8-HX6
John 1870 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQR7-D4Y
Sarah 1872 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYP4-5Z9

Lots of early deaths and as did happens from these early deaths of children, some names reused and repeated, sadly more than once. Obviously important family first names they must be...

The family seem to be living at 84 Clyde Street Anderston in the 1871 census but Ancestry has James's wife as Margaret Aged 4 so looking at he original on SP might be worth while.

Children

David 23
Elizabeth 36
Matilda 18
Mary 16
William 14
Margaret 13
James 10
Ellen 6
Jane 6
John 11 months

I think James married again to an Ann

In the 1881 census James Ann and two children Jane 16 and John 10 are living at no 15 Stone Row Culthill Glasgow. James is born Ireland and described as a Brick Work Labourer.

In the 1891 census James ans Ann are living at 2 Netherhouse Cottages along with John 21William King 23 (shown as stepson) and Elizabeth 2 shown as daughter

James's age is now shown as 75 and Ann as 47 James is described as a general labourer.

Some checking on SP is required to show this is correct family.

Hello All, there is a very good chance that the James Wilkie, married to Mary Morrow, or Murray, did marry again as Higgsy, mentions on the last post.

If it is the correct James Wilkie, then he married Ann Beaton, 1878. Abbey, Paisley. both James, and Ann, were widower and widow on the marriage, James Wilkie, aged 55 years, Carter, parents William Wilkie, and Isabella Marshall, both deceased.

Ann Beaton, had previously been married to William King, 31/Dec/1867. Abbey, Paisley, they had two children, William King, born 01/April/1868. this tallies with Higgsy, 1891. when this William King, aged 23 years is living with James Wilkie, and Ann Beaton, the second son John King, born 11/July/1869. Abbey, Paisley.

On the 1881. census for James Wilkie,he born in Ireland, and Ann Beaton, she is born in Paisley, with Jane Wilkie, aged 16 years, and John Wilkie, aged 10 years, these two Wilkie, children are correct ages and places of birth, Glasgow, for two of James Wilkie, and Mary Morrow, children.

James Wilkie, also named his first daughter Isabella, most likely after his mother, and his second son William, after his father.

It also looks very much like James Wilkie, and Mary Morrow/Murray, had around 15 children, with quite a few passing away young.

However you still need his death certificate to ensure you have the correct James Wilkie, the only snag its seem his age is all over the place.

Regards,
Jonn.
