Where is CILFOWIN, Pembrokeshire?
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 00:33 BST (UK) »
The following refers to Dr James Thomas, who died on 4th November 1887 at Newcastle Emlyn, Cardiganshire. James was the son of the Rev Timothy Thomas III born in Pencarreg, Carmarthenshire.
*
"The funeral took place at ten o'clock on Wednesday when the body was buried at Cilfowin, Pembrokeshire, where Dr Thomas's father (the late Rev Timothy Thomas) and mother and several of the family are interred."

from the Cambrian News and Merionethshire Standard on 11th November 1887
*
So where is Cilfowin, Pembs. and who was the wife of the Rev Timothy Thomas III (1787-1870) ?
*
Thanks

I wonder whether this is either a simple printing error and that it should read Cilycwm, Carmarthenshire (rather than Pembrokeshire) or that someone couldn't read the actual writing properly i.e. was the 'y' read as an 'f', the 'cw' as 'ow' and the 'm' as 'in'.   I noted at least 2 earlier Timothy Thomas' who were buried here.

Thanks Annette.
It is reasonable that it really means Cilycwm, Carms. but that's a lot of mistakes in just one place name.

I wonder how I could find which other members of the Timothy Thomas family are buried there?

Burials are on FindMyPast and I did a random search 1800+/- 40 years - burials from 1837 don't appear online but between 1760 and 1836 there were over 100 Thomas burials at Cilycwm.

Thanks very much Annette.
The Thomas family I am looking for is a prominent group of Baptist ministers I.e. Three generations of Rev Timothy Thomas. I shall repost in the Carmarthenshire site to continue.

could it be Cilfowyr? It came under the parish of Manordeifi & there was a Baptist Church there from 1716.

1841 census High St, Hamlet of Emlyn, Parish of Cenarth HO107/1383/9 folio 8 pg 7
Timothy Thomas 50 Minister of the Gospel
Anne 50
Lydia 30
Mary 25
James 25 Surgeon
Ann dau
Elizabeth 16
Thomas 12
all born in county

Later census entries show the children as born in Cenarth, so this possible marriage in that parish

Given that Timothy was a Baptist Minister, the only parish register entries you're likely to find for the family are marriages as before the start of civil registration in 1837, all marriages had to be in a parish church apart from Quakers & Jews.

Well done Osprey.
I think this is much more likely. I do not see a mention of the three generations of the Revs. Timothy Thomas in information of the two Baptist churches, but I am hoping that burial records will list them and other family members.

An item in Seren Cymru also of 11 November 1887 is clear the funeral was in Cilfowyr
