Greenway family, Alderney
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 01:17 BST (UK) »
I'm new to the site.  My sister and I are looking for any information on the Greenway family (Alderney).  My paternal grandfather was Leslie J Greenway.  I believe that he was the eldest of 11 children born to William Greenway.
Any help would be appreciated  :)

Hi Suz:  my Great-grandfather was William, and he did come as a soldier (Major).  He married Adele Violet Coombs, and had 11 children, one of who was MIA during WWII (Ronald).  My grandfather, Leslie (1910-19900 was also in the British Army WWII and was an anti-aircraft gunner.  His wife, Mildred (Mason)(1906-1987 and 5 children, Robert, Melvyn, twins Douglas and Kenneth and Doreen June escaped to England from the islands, and then travelled to Canada in 1948.  I know that the twins and June were born in Alderney, but not sure of my father Robert (Bobbie) (1935-2003) and Melvyn were or not.

I hope that this answers the questions that both Suz and Rosie have :)
Thank you in advance
Alynn

Hope you don't mind me asking but was your Grandfather born as Leslie John Coombes or is it just coincidence Adele had a brother of the same name ...Going by the army connection Suz mentioned William Greenway a possibility born 1884 Herefordshire ?

Rosie17:
I believe that Leslie John Greenway and Leslie John Coombes are the same person.  Both were born in 1910.  William and Adele were married in 1913.  Btw this is Alynn's sister.  Cannot find out when William came to the island
He did come from Herefordshire but when great aunts went to search they were told records were lost in a fire.  He did join the army before legal age for that time.  Anything to point us in the right direction is appreciated.  Thank you all who have responded thusfar.
