Marlborough, Seaham Harbour
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 02:19 BST (UK) »
My Grandmother grew on Marlborough St. in Seaham Harbour.  Anybody know the approx. age of the townhomes there?  From Google maps there look rather new compared to the time my Grandmother was there (circa 1900).  Thanks for any info.

There are mostly new builds along Marlborough St - 1960s perhaps later (1980s? :-\).

But there is the old red brick pub on the corner of Charles Street which I would say was originally not a pub - perhaps some kind of public building since converted to a pub.

Look at the terrace houses in Emily Street E which runs parallel to Marlborough Street - I would hazard a guess that the original houses on Marlborough St that your Grandmother grew up in, may have looked similar.  :)

An old map of the area, which is not very clear unfortunately:

Someone else may be able to help you further ....

There is a website:- www.seaham.com which has a 'Chatroom' page. Perhaps one of the people on there might be able to help you.

You can see Marlborough Street on the 1897 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/442586/549416/12/100615 It is not on the 1895 map. (you will probably have to zoom out)

Cornelia Terrace seem to be the only original houses left. Marlborough now is not in the same location as Marlborough Street was.

My grandmother was born at 50 Marlborough Street in 1907. I wonder if they would have known each other. Looking at the late 19th century maps Marlborough Street looks to have run parallel to the modern day Marlborough, between Marlborough and Cornelia Terrace. Did you get anywhere with your searches?

According to “Seaham Harbour: The first 100 years. 1828-1928” by Tom McNee,  Marlborough Street was built during the period 1857-1870.

A quotation from the text: “…houses for Seaham’s new middle class were going up in Marlborough Street and Cornelia Terrace.”

According to Tony Whitehead’s “The Londonderrys, Masters of Seaham”, Marlborough Street was named for the Marquess of Blandford, later the Duke of Marlborough, who married into the Londonderry family.
