Oh, I'm so sorry - of course - I didn't see that slip!

Put it down to old age!

Perhaps father for Jane was Henry Fry.
There are militia records showing him as Captain, Major, etc.

1852 census for Gwillimbury - didn't note which there is
Henry Fry 57, gentleman, married to 50 year old Elenor.  Both born Ireland and Church of England religion
Children are HEnry 24 Ann 18, William 17, all born Ireland and then Stephen 11, born in Canada.

Not sure it was as backwoods as you think :).  There is an interesting book about King Township on the ourroots site

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=3941754

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King,_Ontario

There were several settlements in King - connected to Toronto (York) via Yonge Street.   The population in 1842 was about 2,600.  This is certainly not large, but is much more than a couple of tin shacks.   :) Certainly there would have been work for lawyers/law clerks.

The Law Society of Upper Canada (Ontario) was established in 1797.

I wonder if the local library or historical society would have some information for you (directories, newspaper articles etc).  There are some good links here.

Globe and Mail newspaper... from 1848.

A notice saying that the partnership between Septimus Tyrwhitt and Charles Edward Eaton, as millers and traders under the name Tyrwhitt & Eaton was dissolved on 8th of March.  This notice is dated June 12, 1848, King.

So perhaps didn't start out as a law clerk?

In 1849, another notice in the Globe and Mail...

In the matter of Septimus Tyrwhitt and Charles Edward Eaton, bankrupts.  A general meeting of the creditors will be held at the District Court Office on April 2 1848.  Notice dated Toronto, March 12, 1849 - by order of J. Maulson, Judge Home District Court

Septimus in King

http://www.king.ca/Visitors/HistoryandHeritage/History/Kettleby/Pages/default.aspx

If you read down a bit... Charles Eaton is mentioned:

So, if you contact local history groups/libraries, you should be concentrating on Kettleby, King Township :)

Looks like Tyrwhitt and Eaton bought 40 acres for their mill in 1842.

See the section on the history of King Township from the Aurora Banner, 1938  (about a third of the way down the page)
