Thank you for the  information, but I've now hit a snag. My great-great-grandfather John Stevenson is listed as deceased on my great-grandfather Peter and great-grandmother Jane Barry's Register of Marriage Certificate dated 31 December, 1859. The certificate also lists John as a Miner not a Carter.
It's back to square one for me I guess.

So you now know that your John isn't the son of Robert Stevenson and Janet Grant.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
