Just to add that the letter 'I'  was never issued as part of a registration number, see http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xez/

Never issued as a single letter area code according to your link - but it was used in double-letter codes in Northern Ireland.... eg:-

UZ Belfast
VZ Tyrone (Omagh)
WZ Belfast
XZ Armagh
YZ Derry (Coleraine)
JI Tyrone (Omagh)
OI Belfast
UI Londonderry
XI Belfast
IA Antrim (Ballymena)
IB Armagh
IJ Down (Downpatrick)
IL* Fermanagh
IW Derry (Coleraine)
QNI re-registered vehicles

However, 'IG' was always reserved  ...... but it may be that after the Almanac's publication it was issued as 3-letter codes, otherwise some of the refns in this thread woyuld be wrong ....

Just a thought - as IG is a non-starter, what about JG?  I'm sure it's not LG, due to the spacing on the numberplate, but JG might just be OK as far as spacing is concerned!  ::)  My only knowledge of old numberplates was my father's old Ford back in the 1940/50's - DND 656  ;D ;D
