William Pennystone/Peniston/Penniston and Jane Wood, Shipton - York area
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 22:33 BST (UK) »
Hi

I hope the good people of Rootschat can have a quick shufty at this and let me know what they think.

The information I hold about my ancestors William Penneystone/Penitone/Penniston, (there are many spellings of this surname), and his wife Jane Wood is as follows -

Census 1841 (Living at Shipton)

William Peniston Aged 25
Jane Peniston       Aged 25

Both from County of Yorkshire

Census 1851 (Living at Haxby, York)

William Penneyston Aged  34 Born Yorkshire
Jane Penneyston       Aged 32  Born Shipton, Yorkshire

Now I have found a marriage record

Date 13/6/1835

William Penison marries a Jane Wood at Sutton on the Forest 13/6/1835

One of the witness's appears to be a Sarah Wood

I have found a birth for a Jane Wood

Date 22/1/1819

Father – Francis
Mother – Sarah

The trouble is the baptism is at South Cave which is about 34 miles from Shipton, (or to give its full name is, I think, Shipton by Beningbrough).

Can anyone help me? Do you think I have the wrong marriage and/or birth for Jane Wood?

Thanks for reading this post

Regards

Eric

You really need to confirm that her maiden name was Wood and that you have the right marriage.

A copy of one of the childrens birth certs will give that info

Cheers Carole I will apply for it.

Of course if the mothers name was Wood there is then the question of the birth of Jane Wood to look at, but the one I quoted is the only one in the surrounding area I can find. However as it is 34 miles distant from where Jane Pennystone states she was born I doubt she is the one.

Anyway, first things first, I will get the birth certificate of one of her children.

Eric

I wonder if the Shipton referred to is actually Shiptonthorpe, west of Market Weighton on the way to York?  I have someone in my tree whose birthplace was given as Shipton, corroborated by the Shiptonthorpe parish registers.

Hi Eric

I think maybe Jane had lowered her age a bit.

Sutton on the Forrest
Baptisms
1814
b. 17 Sept 1814
bpt. 9 Oct 1814
Jane d/o Thomas and Sarah Wood of Huby, Labourer

Sarrah (sic) Wood is still in Sutton in 1851 age 66 Labourer's widow  b. Osmodley (Osmotherly?)

I think these bear investigation if Alfred's mother is called Jane Wood.

Jane had a sister called Sarah b.1817 so it is more likely she was the marriage witness.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I guess Venelow your suggestion seems to be most likely to be the right women, (if indeed a Jane Wood did become the wife of William Penneyston). The trouble is it something that is hard to prove. Why did she have to lie about her age? There seemed no reason to do so. Maybe in those days some men liked to believe they had a younger bride and the lady concerned obliged.

Anyway I will get the birth certificate of one of their children and see what that shows.

Cheers

Eric
