Passengers to New Zealand
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 23:36 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone. I hope you all had a really nice Easter!

I am currently trying to find out when my great great grand mother Anna Maria (alt spelling Marie) Madsen and her sister Anne Margrethe Krosp and brother-in-law Hans Jessen Krosp (alt spelling Crosp) came to New Zealand and if they came out with other siblings?

From my own research I estimate they most likely came over in 1876.

If anybody can advise me of the easiest way to find this out, that would would be wonderful (as so far I have drawn a blank). Or any information regarding this little mystery is most welcome.

Many thanks,

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

This is the best place to start searching for them.
https://beta.familysearch.org/search/collection/1609792

A MADSEN family which included a Marie (wife) arrived on the Reichstag to Canterbury in 1874.

On paperspast.natlib.govt.nz there is a death for Hans Jessen Krosp in the Wairarapa Age, dated 1 April, 1919 - he had been in NZ for 45 years.

There is a notice here in 1884 when they were naturalised

Going by an arrival date in the 1870's and his nationality "Celeano" might be a good pick to investigate passenger lists as it did 11 trips to NZ.

Assisted migration to the Wairarapa, sounds like a rough start

Anna was approx born in 1857 and she married widower Jens Prebensen in Greytown in 1881. She had a daughter Annie (born in Greytown sept, 1884) and sons John (born in Ballance 1892) and Thomas (born in Ballance in 1894) who grew up in Ballance.

Her sister Anne Margareth Krosp I think was born in 1851 in Denmark and married in about Oct, 1875 in Denmark before coming out to NZ.

Hello...

Can't help with the passenger list (sorry) but do you know the names of Anna Marie's parents i.e your g-g-g-grandparents.

Quote from: Ashnz
Anne Margareth was born in 1851
Anna Maria was approx born in 1857

FamilySearch have a Hans Christian MADSEN and his wife Kirstine Maria CHRISTENDATTER living in Brondum, Ribe, Denmark. Amongst their children are two daughters, Anna Magrethe MADSEN b.1851 and Anna Maria MADSEN b.1857.

Possibly you already know this. If not, from where did you get the dates that you mentioned in reply #7.

Anna Magrethe MADSEN b.1851
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZX-WJ3

Anna Maria MADSEN b.1857
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZX-WPP

Various family members, including Anna Maria, are still in Brondum in the 1860 and 1870 censuses.

---

Do you have a copy of the 1881 PREBENSEN/MADSEN marriage certificate mentioned by Janette in reply #6 as it should mention the bride's parents.

---

It's possible that Anna Magrethe's husband Hans KROSP came to NZ earlier with his parents Jacob and Anna. Maybe mid to late 1860's.

Having said that, just because his parents supposedly migrated to NZ there's no reason their twenty-ish year old son Hans would have travelled with them.

For what it's worth, Hans' older brother is still in Denmark/Prussia in 1868.

And if you've not seen it here is Anna Magrethe's Will...
