40 Pembroke Place Liverpool
« on: Friday 10 April 15 21:07 BST (UK) »
Hello,
On the 1911 census, Charles Blackburn's occupation was listed as 'liscensed victualer' and manager. The address was 40 Pembroke Place in Liverpool. Does anyone know whether this was a public house or, was it the family home, with Charles travelling to work every day.
                   Many Thanks

The 1911 image should tell you whether he is working at home - look along the columns at the top under Profession or Occupation

The City of Liverpool Licensing Book, 1909 edition confirms that Chas.Blackburn was manager of the Stag's Head at 40 Pembroke Place for Yates Castle Brewery Ltd. It had 954 square feet of drinking space and 11 rooms used for domestic purposes.  There had been two licensees since 1 Jan. 1900.

"As their family grew larger Charlie and his wife Elizabeth became proprietors of a number of public houses in Liverpool. Premises included the Farmers Arms in Great Newton Street and the Stags Head Hotel at 40 Pembroke Place. They stayed at the Stags Head for almost 60 years. It was here, with Charlie as local president of the National Union of Boxers, that the Liverpool Branch of the Boxers Union met, and where many sporting stars and VIP personalities called over the years to enjoy his hospitality. Charlie passed away on 2 August 1950 as one of the Liverpool's oldest and most respected professional boxers."
