Certainly like old-fashioned  ;D. Have found it's only 2½ hours by train from Huddersfield with 1 change, so will definitely be off there this summer.

Thanks for all that info. I'm looking for Frances Isadore Matilda Diamond or Palmer

I can find Frances in the 1871 census as Frances I M Damond and she was still a spinster at this time. The next time I find her is in 1882 as Frances Palmer, being married to Robert Ruddick. In the MC she is described as a widow, living in Eden Street, Saltburn by the Sea and working as a domestic help. Obviously she had married a man called Palmer sometime between 1871 and 1882 and he had died. I cannot find Frances in the 1881 census either as a Diamond or as a Palmer.

Apologies, londonscorpion  ;) for hitching a ride on your topic.  :-* - now back to the main topic  :-X.

There is no Frances of any surname listed in Eden Street in 1881. It's always possible that a domestic servant got left off the census.

Is she the Frances aged 18 born Ireland in 1871 RG10/2698/40/13?

PS [and more apologies londonscorpion] I've done yarn bombing myself!!

On the marriage certificate, does it give a house number in Eden Street?  Looking at the 1881 census, there are a number of empty houses in Eden Street (6,7,10,16,18,20,21,22 and 23) - possible that the owners and their servants were away from Saltburn at the time of the census  :-\  Possibly not the ideal location for some - north-east coast in early April  :-\

Josey, Yes that's the right Frances.

The MC gives no house number.

I been on Google to look the houses in Eden Street and none of them look grand enough to have domestic servants. Am I missing something here?

You didn't need to live in grand house to have a domestic servant in 1881. Was she the only domestic servant in that household? If she was, then she was probably a general domestic servant or maid of all work. Running even a small household entailed a lot of work back then, and a live-in servant was paid very little above their board and lodging, so a family didn't to have a high income in order to afford having a servant. The houses on Eden Street look plenty big enough to house a family with a servant, although I'm not sure when the current ones were built. Very typical Victorian terrace but the question is, were they all there by 1881? Most of the current houses on Eden Street could well predate 1881, but not by much.
