RAF No 20 O.T.U Aircraft crash 1942 ... Information
« on: Sunday 12 April 15 01:59 BST (UK) »
I wonder if someone could assist please?

My cousin was Berry Arthur Neill who was a Fl / Sgt in the RNZAF during WWII.  He was attached to the RAF NO 20 O.T.U. and on the night of 2nd April 1942 along with 5 other airman was killed when their Wellington bomber crashed into a hill near the village of Sinsharnie near Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Berry Neill is interred in the Lossiemouth Cemetery.

I have a copy of the report by the RAF into the crash and have researched it extensively elsewhere but have been unable to find any reference to the precise site of the aircraft crash.

Would anyone know locally if there is any marker or some other kind of a memorial at Sinsharnie or the surrounding district of the crash?

I will be visiting Scotland next August and would very much like to visit the the crash site or memorial if that were possible.  Of course I will also be paying my respects to Berry in the  Lossiemouth Cemetery.

Any information or assistance would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Alex G

Have you got this?

Apl 02 Wellington of D. Flight, 20 OTU, Lossiemouth, crashed in a turnip field on a hillside
at Sinsharnie Farm near the main Huntly to Keith road.   Crew of 6 killed (Banffshire Jounal Tuesday, January 13th, 1942)

http://toonloon.bizland.com/ppap/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/W.W.2-Incidents.pdf

and "is owned and farmed by the Davidson family at Cairnie, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire with three generations currently working on the farm".

I don't think Sinsharnie is a village anymore but if you drove there you would almost be at the crash site

I telephoned the farm today, and spoke to Mrs Davidson's daughter. She informed me that there is no marker where the plane crashed. Others have been to see the site in the past, and the owners have no problem with you visiting. The crash site was in one of the fields.

Malky.

Sinsharnie was never a village, just a farm.

Malky and Forfarian

Thank you so much for your interest and inquiries on my behalf.

I will be travelling by rental car from Aberdeen so looking forward to calling in at Sinsharnie.  So very kind of the people.

Once again thank you, much appreciated.
