Richard Goodyer / Goodger of Coates cum Burton
« on: Monday 13 April 15 08:10 BST (UK) »
Richard Goodyer / Goodger and his wife Elizabeth baptised nine children between Sep 1782 and July 1804 at Coates cum Burton. I believe the marriage in Petworth between Richard Goodyer and Elizabeth Smithers on 2 June 1782 might be their marriage.
One of their sons was called Clement - a name which recurs in my family of Goodyers from nearby Bury. Richard and Elizabeth's son William was married in Bury and baptised several children there. Clement lived in Bury with his second wife (Charlotte Parnell) and their family.

So with the unusual name and Bury being close, I suspect that Richard is connected to my family somehow. Please can anyone help find a baptism for him.
As he had children over a 22 year period, I would expect him to have been married in his early twenties, so a birth year about 1760 seems likely.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

No baptism for Richard in Coates or Burton under any surname spelling.  Nothing in Bury either but a Clement Goodyer on 14 Apr 1766 s/o William & Ann, the Sarah on 3 Jul 1768.  There's also a William Goodhew on 9 Mar 1777 s/o William & Ann again at Bury.  All on SFHG site.

Thank you for trying to find Richard. I had the baptisms of Clement, William and Sarah. William is my direct ancestor. The parents William and Ann (nee Hammond) were married at Bury on 16 May 1765, so I think Richard would be too old to be their son. I don't know whether either had been married previously. If I have the right burial for Ann (10 Feb 1813), she would have been about 30 when she married, so possible she had been married before.

A John Hammond was buried at Bury on 22 Jun 1761, no age given.  (SFHG)

A James Hammon married an Ann Billings on 15 Dec 1758 at Sindlesham, marriage licence 14 Dec in name of Hammond Archdeconry of Chichester.  Might be John?

Thanks again. Do you mean Sidlesham? the only Sindlesham I can find is in Berkshire.
Looking at a map Sidlesham is quite some distance from Bury, but it is something to bear in mind as dates would fit.

Yes I did mean Sidlesham, sorry for the typo.   :-[

It's due south of Chichester on the B2145 to Selsey.  It's immediately north of Pagham Harbour.
