I have no knowledge of foundlings but I think if you give some details you might have more chance of getting some help, such as:
her name?
date/year/month of birth?
place of birth/where she was found?
how do you know she was a foundling?

If she was taken in by an institution there may be records available.  :-\ Or perhaps poor law union/workhouse records?

I'm sure others will have better knowledge of this and more ideas for you to follow up.

My Gt Grandmother was a foundling.  The name she had or was given was Catherine McLean.  Place of birth was Lanarkshire, Scotland.   Date of birth 1842 approx.   no her marriage certificate it states.  Parents Name:  parents unknown being a foundling.

I doubt if you are going to find much by way of documentary evidence. You could perhaps start by looking for institutions where she may have been raised. That could give some indication of precisely where and when she was abandoned.

I think your best bet for trying to find who she may have been would be to do an autosomal DNA test and see if it leads you to family names in the appropriate area.

Thank you for your reply.  What exactly is an autosomal DNA test?

If you could find a more precise parish of birth from a census, you could investigate the minutes of the kirk session.

Here is a presentation that tells you about different types of dna testing for genetic genealogy:

This link gives an independent review of the major testing companies:

Hi Sylvia

An honest view, it will be so hard anything of note in this pre 1855 (and the start of official registration in Scotland) period  :-\

Have you found her in 1851 and 1861 censuses?

Monica  :)

Reading up on autosomal DNA testing to the mo.   Had a look at Church of the Latter Day Saints site but didn't get anything on the census.   Maybe I'm not doing to correctly - a bit of a novice at this.  Thanks Monica.
