Aird Marriage 1744
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 14:31 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone, can anyone explain why there is a marriage of Andrew Aird to Elizabeth Gillis, Bamburgh St. Aidan 13th May 1744 and then Marriage of Andrew Aird to Elizabeth Gillise at Chatton Holy Cross on the 14th May 1744 ?
Very confusing but you may have an explanation.
Thank you in anticipation.
Billy

Hi Billy. I think, and I may be wrong, but I believe that marriage banns had to be read in each of the couple's parishes, so maybe so in your family's case.  I had one or two like that in Church of Scotland, so I presume probably the same in Church of England. I remember feeling a bit puzzled, but once I saw both of the records it made sense.

Hope this helps, someone of course may have a different answer for you!

Cheers
Jeanne 😄

At least one of the marrying couple had to be resident in the parish which they wished to be married  (usually that of the bride); the banns of the other party were read in his/her parish of residence, and a certificate provided from the clergyman stating it was properly done.

I'm trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Aird b5/12/1756 Coldrife farm, father Andrew Aird. It looks like they could fit, but I could be wrong of course. :)

13th May 1744 was a Sunday, so was most likely the reading of Banns, and the marriage on the Monday.
It says at the bottom of the entry for the 13th, Notes   Got a certificate for Doddington

Thanks Stan, just reading this re Chatton church. 'It is believed that the first church was destroyed in the thirteenth century, a second church on a site nearer to the river was subjected to flooding and burned down early in the eighteenth century – though the walls survived. The vicar, William Burrell, started restoration work, though the place is reported to have been in ruins for many years and possibly afflicted by another fire. Re-building started in earnest in 1770 in the early gothic revival style.' Sounds like it would have been a bit of a state in 1744!
