Bodycotes - Philadelphia PA - how to progress?
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 16:10 BST (UK) »
I am going to try and keep this brief, but I can provide background and references if necessary.

After years of research, it looks as though my elusive 4 x great grandfather, Joseph Bodycote, borrowed some money in 1855 and then emigrated from Leicester, England to Philadelphia with his partner Charlotte Noon and their son Joseph Noon Bodycote.  This would fit in neatly with the emigration at that time of framework knitters from the East Midlands to the Germantown district of Philadelphia.

It also looks as if Joseph’s sojourn in the New World was short and he died in Philadelphia in January 1857, after an accident on the Reading Railroad.

I am now in contact with someone in New Jersey, who I picked up from a tree on Ancestry and who may or may not be a relative.    My contention is that Joseph, bless his heart, is 4 x great grandfather to both of us.

I am descended from the oldest child of his marriage. That much is clear.

I contend that my contact is the 3 x great grandson of Joseph’s illegitimate son Joseph Noon Bodycote.  Joseph Noon Bodycote was born in Leicester in 1829, married there in 1851 and then disappears from English records.  I am as sure as I can be that he is the Joseph Bodycote, born in 1829, who dies in Philadelphia in 1904.  All the American trees on Ancestry start with Joseph Jnr as if he has simply sprung from the earth!

My only problem is – how do I prove this?  I have e mailed the Philadelphia Archives twice and have received no response.  I have also contacted the Genealogical Society of Philadelphia, again with no response.  Is this standard for the US and, if so, how do I get someone to respond?

According to the US census returns, Joseph Jnr was naturalised, so I guess I need to see his naturalisation papers, but if I cannot get a response from anyone I am not sure how I can do this.

As always, grateful for any suggestions.

If you have a Family History Center nearby, you can request the microfilm records.

There are some online sources for naturalization records.  Some links are available here - http://www.germanroots.com/naturalization.html  Depending on the time frame of the naturalization, there may not be a great deal of personal information on the papers.

1900 census gives his birth as June 1829
Death, while unfortunately not giving his parents' names, does give an exact age
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11692-155173-33?cc=1320976
74 years, 11 months, 4 days on 20th May 1904.  Which would be what, around 16 June 1829?

Do you have a baptism record for him in Leicester?

No baptism record sadly, but I do have this:

The Leicester Chronicle: or, Commercial and Agricultural Advertiser (Leicester, England), Saturday, May 09, 1829

Joseph Bodycote was brought up for leaving his wife and family chargeable to St Leonard's parish. It appeared that the defendant had offended four different times in this respect, and had cost the parish about twenty pounds. He brought his wife from the East Indies, and has since been cohabitating with another woman, who had one child, and is again pregnant by him. The prisoner was sentenced to hard labour for three months.

It is my contention that Joseph Jnr is the child in utero at the time of the court proceedings. That ties in neatly with his age on UK census returns.

Is this enough?

That sounds about right.

I know where I'm going with this, I'm just incredibly frustrated by the fact that I cannot get anyone in the States to respond to me.

The Genealogical Society of Philadelphia has set fees for lookups - http://genpa.org/resources/research-mail-services/research-services

The Philadelphia Archives also has a list of fees - http://www.phila.gov/records/pdfs/archivesFees.pdf

If you were expecting detailed research for free from these organizations, that may be unrealistic.  If you are willing to pay, I would either ask for payment options in your e-mail or call them directly.

Thanks Shelly.  I am aware of this and had written in those terms.

In my experience, no-one does detailed research for free!
