Marriage of John McGuinness-Margaret Duffy Coolagherty ?
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 18:54 BST (UK) »
Im looking into the McGuinness family from Coolagherty Co Longford for a friend.
I have a fair bit of info already but im stuck on where the marriage of John McGuinness and Margaret Duffy took place.

There is a very good possibility that John and Margaret may have married in the United State'S Circa 1902, I believe this because on the 1911 Irish census they are living with their 5 children at House 1 Coolagherty Co Longford.
Their oldest Child James T is 8 and his place of birth is New York.
Further info states the couple are married 9 years.
John and Margaret are both aged 40, he is a Farmer.

I have John's Birth Cert from 1871,his parents  James Mc Guinness and Ellen Donohue (could be Donoghue) in the parish of Drumlish,Co Longford ..(the writing is difficult to read)
John died November 24th 1950.

John had a Brother called James, who died October 16 1982 ...unsure as if there were anymore children.

For the time been I would be grateful for any help tracing a marriage Cert for either John and Margaret Duffy.
I would also be interested in details of  his Parents James and Ellen Donohue.

Thanks Gaffy,
I wasnt aware of the Girls, looking at the births I think it might be fair to assume that James and Ellen 'May' have been married circa 1865-67 ?.

The variation of spelling of the name from Mc Ginness to McGuinness throws a spanner in the works.

Im convinced that John married Margaret Duffy in the USA in 1902 and I think the wedding may have taken place in New York.
Any idea's on how to get my hands on  Copy of the Marriage cert if New York was the area.?

Hello,

Just for reference in case you don't have it. I think this is likely to be the family in censuses- no John though

1901

Maguinness, Moyne

1911
McGuinness, Moyne

I looks like was James Married twice, as we have Julia Aged 59 as wife 1901 census born Co Longford, then 1911 census Ellen 72 Born Leitrim as wife.

I would say no, although it is odd.
I think sometimes you do get these mix ups. According to 1911, they have been married 50 yrs and have had 8 children- all still living.

Its a bit 50/50 ..I think the Leitrim place of Birth for Ellen is significant though?
If James filled out form its possible he stated what he believed to be the case that including both marriages he was indeed married 50 years.?
