Hi,
attached is a scan of an old tin photograph which sadly is now lost, and this is all we have left.
We believe it to be my 2nd Great Grandmother Ann Cresswell (Owen, Reeves). If it is possible to date the photo, it will narrow down as to whether it is her or her daughter, my Great Grandmother Sarah Owen. I must say the likeness to my Grandmother Ada is uncanny.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Dating will be impossible from this I'm afraid Bev, we'd need to see the whole thing uncropped showing every bit of the physical picture. Also the back if you have it.

Cheers,

Although the second picture is a lot better it is still difficult to restore. As a tintype is often reversed I've posted both sides.  Ann Creswell is sat in a car, which was evidently quite often used as a studio prop, but in that case I think it will date it to the late 1800s, early 1900s. I am no use at dating really, so I'm sure somebody will come along who knows a lot more than me.

Tintype, right. Well then, carry on  :P

Actually Trishanne, tintypes are always reversed, because the picture is the negative.

Thank you everyone for looking. The dates I have for Ann Cresswel are:
born 2 July 1844 - died 1926.
Her daughter Sarah Owen    born 26 Sep 1876 - died 12 Jan 1933
but in that case I think it will date it to the late 1800s, early 1900s. I am no use at dating really, so I'm sure somebody will come along who knows a lot more than me.

Does the fact that it is tintype give a date range that would fit with Ann or Sarah, given the age of the lady in the picture?

Once again thank you all

From what I have read tintypes started about 1860 and lost popularity in the early 1900s. The car will date it more to the end of the 1800s, early 1900s, so I would guess this is Ann Creswell as Sarah Owen would only be about 24 in 1900. I think this lady is older than that.
