John Erskine & Margaret Maben of Kirkcudbright
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 09:24 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Hoping for some help.

John Erskine born circa 1811 Krikcudbright married Margaret Maben born Circa 1811
on 20 March 1834
I have found birth records for the following children:-
Mary born 24 April 1835 deceased ?
Mary born 1 March 1836
Jane born 10 Sep 1838 died Bendigo Victoria Australia 1924
Ellen born 24 Jul 1840
Janet born 17 Dec 1841 deceased ?
Samuel born 22 Dec 1843 deceased ?
Samuel born 26 Jan 1845
John born 4 Feb 1846 died 16th May 1915
Margaret born 23 Aug 1850

Margaret Erskine nee Maben died prior to the 1851 census
John Erskine married Catherine Sayers in 1851
He died in 17 Mar 1853.

I can't find Margaret's exact date of Death.  I'd also like to find who her parents are, I believe her father is James Maben.

Samuel & John Erskine are living with their Uncle James McCleave & Aunt Mary McCleave nee Erskine in 1861.  John continues to reside with the family, he marries Mary Ann ? 1894 and his cousin Ellen McCleave is living with the family in 1901.
Would like to know what happened to Samuel.

The youngest child Margaret is living with her Aunt Jane Maben in 1861 and with both Jane and her widowed Aunt Isabella Morton nee Maben in 1871.  In 1881 Margaret is a Dressmaker and still living in St Cuthbert St Kirkcudbright.
Not Sure what happens to her after 1881

I have not been able to find what happened to Mary or Ellen.   If anyone could shed any light it would be much appreciated.

cheers
Genni

The statutory deaths did not start till 1855 so you might find it difficult to find an exact date you might be lucky to find burial records ....As the aunt's( Maben ) were still alive in 1861.. if you get a death for them that will give you their parent's names

Thank you so much Matt, your help is very much appreciated.
Fills in some of the dates and a whole lot of information on the families.

Is there a possible mistake in the death of Margaret as I was certain she died 1850.  I have John's marriage to Catherine Sayers 10 June 1851, she was a servant living in his household on the 1851 census.

Which I could find what happened to Samuel, Mary & Ellen.

Cheers

Genni :)

Hi Genni
I have checked but do not have a photograph of the two headstones mentioned. However I do
have a photo for some of the McCleave family. It states that a James McCleave died 11th Jan 1869
aged 71years & his spouse Mary Erskine died 7th Jan 1889 aged 83 years.Plus details of their
5 children. Could this be the aunt & uncle from the 1861 census?
If you would like a copy send me a PM with your email address.

It is more than possible that Margarets date has been transcribed incorrectly as 1851.
I will be up in Scotland in about 10 days and will be happy to check the stones & photograph them
for you,if you wish.
