I don't suppose that 1917 document gives his army number?

Thanks to all for the help. I'll ask my pal for any extra details so that we can proceed. The doc was a birth cert & just stated that the father was in the 3rd Batt etc. I think a marriage cert is now reqd.
Cheers,
Bob

My gr grandfather was 3rd Batttalion Black Watch.

His wedding record actually stated that he was a Royal Highlander.

I have his engraved medals, the service number is engraved around the edge of the medal.

We also have his Black Watch WW1 Cap Badge

I could only get his medal card showing he saw battle in France and he appears in wounded lists - no service record after much help from
http://www.1914-1918.net/
and the Black Watch Museum.

The 3rd Battalion Black Watch men were used to bring 1st and 2nd Battalions up to fighting strength when their men needed rest or replacement.

"The Black Watch's primary recruiting areas are in Fife, DUNDEE, Angus and Perth and Kinross, with the Battalion Headquarters and regimental museum located at Balhousie Castle, Perth."

Thanks to all for the help.
I have now found documentation to show he was in the Black Watch. I have also managed to complete part of his family tree for a research colleague.
Cheers,
