I have not been able to locate the birth record for my great grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Morgan Jones.
*
I found a baptism record for Thomas Jones, son of John Jones (who was a shoemaker) and Elinor, his wife, on 12th September 1847 in Lampeter, Cardiganshire.
*
His obituary states that his date of birth was 10th July 1847, but I've yet to confirm that. The earliest mention of the middle name Morgan that I've seen is on the 1871 Census record.
*
So ... I purchased a couple of certs already that weren't him. I asked the GRO to search for him and they couldn't find him.
*
Could his birth have been registered in nearby Carmarthenshire? I don't know.
*
Any help and/or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Richard

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5 so many thousands of births went unregistered prior to then (and also afterwards)

Hi Richard

Although civil registration started in 1837, the onus was on the registrars to go around their district and register the births. The law changed in 1874 and the onus was then put on the parents. However, in those 37 years a small but unquantifiable numbers of births weren't registered so there won't be a cert to find.

In these cases, the GRO is not always the best place to ask and as a final resort try asking the local register offices if they can locate a birth.

If his birth was around July, I would have expected a baptism sooner than September, yes some baptisms were later but parents were usually quick off the mark. The mortality rate was a lot higher in some areas and parents didn't want their children being unbaptised for too long just in case.

No. He is Thomas M Jones, 24, boarder and Curate of Glyncorrwg, born in Lampeter and living with Robert and Lavinia Crockford. The sub-reg district is Ystradvelltey; the registration district is Neath.
*
There are 1851 and 1861 Census records for Thomas living with his family in Lampeter too.

Hi again, would it not be better to purchase his marriage certificate to Henrietta to find his father and his fathers occupation?

Hello Keyboard.
I know that the father of Thomas was John Jones aka Jaci Baker, shoemaker of Lampeter.
*
I want to know for sure his date of birth and I'm also hoping to confirm the maiden name of his mother Elinor.
