Cruikshank graves at Stracathro, Angus, LOOKUP please
« on: Saturday 18 April 15 08:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, I hope this is posted in the right place.....
I have tracked the Cruikshanks of Stracathro estate (Patrick & 3rd wife Marjory Gerard) but I haven't been able to locate their graves.  His 1797 Will states he wants to be buried with wife Marjory at Stracathro, but he died soon after in London. Can anybody lookup to see if one or both are buried at the Stracathro graveyard, or point me to somewhere that does.  He died very rich so the graves may be quite grand, if that helps.
any help gratefully accepted, thanks

On the Strathcathro cemetery map, the Cruickshank family grave, with both Patrick and Marjory there among others, is close to the church, on the right hand side opposite the gate - perhaps someone local might be able to help?  I'll send you a pm.

Grave Stone, carved from Aberdeen Granite, though relatively recently erected
(1918) the inscriptions are difficult to read. However, I have transcribed in full, I
believe incorrectly.

So thanks again.

You are welcome. Considering the distance you are from Stracathro, I
post an overall view of the Church. The grave stone photo is the one at the
base of the right hand window. There is no evidence of a stone being in
place prior to this one.

I note that the item in the link referred to above says he was from Gorton, Strathspey; the transcription says he was from Gordon; and that he was from Strathspey.

There is a farm called Gortons in the parish of Knockando in Moray, right beside the River Spey. See http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=57.4326&lon=-3.3600&layers=5

This is just a few miles downriver from Grantown-on-Spey. I wonder if Patrick's "brother-in-law in Grantner" was actually in Grantown?

Delvey, referred to as part of his estates, could be Dalvey? See http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ1132 - this is between Grantown and Gortons.

Ringo [?] College has to be a mistranscription of Kings College, and in the same paragraph 'criter' is a mistranscription of 'writer', that is, a lawyer or solicitor.

Of course you may have all this already.

Unfortunately the Knockando parish registers were lost in a fire in the late 18th century, so if Patrick and his brothers were from Knockando, there will lmost certainly be no surviving record of their baptisms. There were lots of Crui(c)kshanks in Knockando.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

thanks for local insight of the place names, it's very helpful when you're trying to decode the past from the geographical present, while on the other side of the world

TS errors; thanks for those too, I had picked up on those, but confirmation is valuable
thanks for your help I'll get back to you if I get a find.
cheers
