George ELLIS - British Home Children
« on: Saturday 18 April 15 10:46 BST (UK) »
I have recently found my Mums half brother, George Ellis leaving England in April 1920 on the ship Metagama which arrived in Saint Johns New Brunswick on 20th April 1920.  I know that George was placed with a farming family in Rawdon Hastings Ontario and have found him on the 1921 Canadian census.  George was born in 1908 and I would like to know what happened to him after the 1921 census, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Orangebliss,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

I've moved your topic to our "Canada" board as you will receive expert help there.

When you have made a few more postings you will be able to add George's details to our database for British Home Children.

Did George have any siblings ? There are several Elliots there already

regards,
Bob

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat

Is that the George Ellis with a middle name of Campbell as shown on anc tree ???
Parents George Ellis (1871 - 1918)  and Charlotte Burt (1878 - 1943)
Although on the Canada Arrivals form 30A -  he seems to have signed his name George John Ellis - Passage paid by Sheltering Homes  Liverpool -  Mother :- Charlotte - Going to Marshmont Home Belleville Ontario - dated 6 th April 1920

Can you clarify what the middle name is, just in case it is useful.  ???

Sandra

Hello
Thanks for you quick reply not sure I am doing this right but here goes.

George arrived in Canada with his brother Arthur but he was sent home due to ill health and I have traced his family here in the UK.
Georges middle name was Campbell on his birth certificate (I think he was illegitimate and this was his fathers surname)  not sure why he signed himself George John.  But the ancestry records you refer to are mine.

Regards
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the info.  Have you read about the book The Heritage Years ?   Township of Stirling-Rawdon in Hastings County, Ontario has struck a committee to do an update to the book, "The
Heritage Years" which was written for the 125th anniversary. They were asking for info on 29 BHC children who were taken to the Stirling Rawdon area - one of the names on the list was George Ellis.

Here's the link to "Clancy" in the book - haven't quite read it myself yet.

There are no BMD registries in Canada - the last available census is 1921 - its quite difficult to get information.  Noticed on the Canada Voters List, there was a George Ellis in Hastings Ontario but its hard to tell if that would be your George.
