Clifford Gilbert Hogan
« on: Sunday 19 April 15 06:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I'm looking for something telling me about Clifford Gilbert Hogan's war record.  I can't find it in Archway.  He was too young to go to war being born in New Zealand in 1901 but he went anyway.  He was wounded at the Somme and came back in 1917 - there is a record of him coming back with a shipload of soldiers.  I've even tried looking in the Australian Army records just in case, but no go.  I'm told that he sometimes used the name Robert Hogan.

To be clear - not interested in his life after the war (in Australia by then) - just interested in finding something about his war.

Challenge!

Cheers

NZ cenotaph doesn't like those names either.

You can also search by birthplace, enlistment place

He might have slipped up and used real details somewhere

Can you show us the Newpaper article with him returning in 1917?

This article has him as 12,402 Private C G Hogan
It is interesting that that number looks different to most of the others listed as it doesn't have a / after the first 2 numerals

Exactly!  His number is very different.  And none of his details will bring up a record - he couldn't tell them he was born in 1901..  He is a man of mystery.

There are a couple of others with a similar number arrangement
10,385 Private A Roberts
23,382 rflmn R D Hodgson

Why not try the "ask for assistance" here

Another weird thing here they have written George G Hogan's service number as 12402. He was from Levin.
Talk about add to the confusion is should read number 12042.

Hi DebNZ,

That soldier on the troopship was George Godfrey HOGAN.

We might have to work this one from the other end.

What do you know of Clifford Gilbert HOGAN's war service?

And can you answer any of these questions?

Where he might have been living when he attested?
What unit he was in?
Do you have any independent knowledge of his service number or rank?
What branch (e.g. infantry, engineers, artillery, signals, transport)?
Do you have access to any surviving uniform or insignia he wore? This should tell you a LOT.
Do you have access to any surviving Army paperwork relating to him (will, discharge certificate, medical-board papers)?
Any letters to family describing his life or events, commanding officer, what type of work he did?

If you search Archway using the terms 'hogan army' you'll get 61 hits, all digitised Army personnel files.

I checked the file for George Godfrey HOGAN, a bullock driver born at Bulls. He didn't have a good war: in fact he was sick even in training camp in New Zealand, where he suffered from chronic gastritis following on measles.

After returning home on that troopship he died in hospital in Wellington on 4 April 1917.
