Frederick and Annie THACKRAY - arrived Melbourne 1929
« on: Sunday 19 April 15 14:03 BST (UK) »
I have recently discovered that Frederick, his wife Annie and two daughters all emigrated to Australia from England in 1920s and would love to know what happened to them after that, in particular their final resting place if at all possible.

This is what I know so far:

Frederick THACKRAY b. 1875 in Myton on Swale, Yorkshire - parents John THACKRAY and Elizabeth ROBERTS

in 1900 married

Annie GRAYSON b. 1870 Bishop Monkton, Yorkshire - parents Henry GRAYSON and Ann NATRESS

Frederick and Annie departed from London with their daughter Frances Muriel THACKRAY b. 1908 Bishop Monkton, on 10 May 1929 on ss Balranald bound for Melbourne. I do not think Frances ever married and may have died in Australia in 1982.

Their other daughter Florence Lillian THACKRAY b. 1902 married Roy Chavasse JACKSON in 1921 and they sailed for Melbourne with 3 children (who I will not name as they may still be living) on 1 September 1927 on ss Baradine.  I think Roy may have died in Australia in 1969.

I would be very grateful for any further information regarding this family particularly Frederick and Annie.

Dear Cupoflife,

Thank you so much for all of that wonderful information, there is absolutely no way I would have found all that and I can not thank you enough  ;D.

The last address in England for all of the family was a terraced house in Harrogate (now a takeaway food shop) and although Frederick described himself as a farmer it seems unlikely he had his own farm at that time.  So I can see the attraction of the offer of a farm in Katandra District although reading some of the information on the website it appears the offer may not have been all it seemed.  I'm not sure the Hope and Hardship publication would be available in UK libraries but I have emailed the society to ask about possibly purchasing a copy.

I just love the fact that Muriel's plaque says late of Yorkshire, UK even though she had presumably been living in Australia for 53 years - far longer than she lived in Yorkshire!

Thank you again for all of your help.
