COMPLETED: Boy or Girl?
« on: Monday 20 April 15 07:16 BST (UK) »
I have an interesting situation that I would like peoples opinions on.

I am researching a Phanuel Knox who was baptised in Maidstone on 24th Oct 1827 at All Saints.
According to familysearch, he was a boy, which makes sense as looking at baby name websites, it appears 'Phanuel' is a boys name.

I thought I found him in the 1841 census in this family group:

Jas Lingham - male - 73 - Laborer - N
Phanuel Lingham - female - 71 - Y
Mary Lingham - female - 47 - Y
James Cooper - male - 75 - Carpenter - N
Elizabeth Cooper - female - 64 - N
Phanuel Knox - female - 12 - Y

This makes some sense as Phanuel's mother's maiden name was 'Lingham'. She died in 1829.

But the census states this is a female, and the Phanuel Lingham above is also female.

I thought I found a marriage in 1848 on freebmd, which appears to be a male also as there are 3 other males recorded and 4 females in that register.

But after 1848, I can find no trace of Phanuel anywhere in the world.

Any ideas?
Is this a male or female?
Can anybody find him/her anywhere else post-1848?

Thanks.
Chris.

Just found the 1848 marriage via the Kent OPC's:

09 February 1848:
KNOX Phanuel  married Henry Augustus ..............Maidstone (All Saints) Maidstone
But this doesn't appear in the freembd indexes

So obviously female.
Maybe familysearch incorrectly indexed this as a male.

The reason why Henry does not appear on the same page as Phanuel is because the page number for Henry has been mis-read as 343 and 345.  I have looked at the scan and have now submitted the correction to page number 348, to correspond with Phanuel's entry.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
