Misty,

Do you have rough yrs of birth for Alexander's kids please  ???

This is "Strath" area http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/16960

I can't figure if Catherine in South Uist could be your relation  ???

Do you have anything to link her to South Uist apart from that death cert. which may not be correct  ???

Sorry if I sound negative but I can see no reason for her to move from Strath to South Uist without proof of a connection there ???

1851 census has Catherine McLean age 80 born South Uist as a pauper formerly seamstress
1861 census has Catherine Morrison age 90, formerly ag lab, in South Boidsale, SouthUist,

JM,

I think those are 2 different people

Jan,

This doesn't add up with this post................
He married a Mary Cameron about 1835
and had 7 children John, Mary (twins) Ann,Janet,Catherine,Janet,Flora,James.
I only have one census 1851 and he is living Dunan and said he was born in strath Inverness- shire

Can you post an image of where parent's names are on Alexander's death cert. please so we can see if his father was alive or deceased at the time as you said it was hard to read  :-\

Ok Father was deceased but may have died 1855 - 1862.

Catherine still alive 1862 so you need to find her on subsequent census' to establish a time frame for her death which would be from 1862 onward until she disappears from census records.

Once you have established a time frame.........search with forename blank & surname MacLean with soundex as she may be recorded as Katy etc. instead of Catherine & take things from there.

You need to search in Skye as Dunan is a parish on Isle of Skye  :P

Hope this throws up something for you  ???
