re: listed names on Griffith's Valuation
« on: Monday 20 April 15 19:45 BST (UK) »
Is there a way to tell if a woman listed on the Griffiths Valuation is married or if she is listed under her maiden name?
On the 1859 printing of Griffith's, I found a Susan McNamee in Rossgarron, Desertmartin, Magherfelt.  I believe the Susan listed here is either the same person as Susan McNamee married to John Lone (3 children from 1848 -1854, all baptized at Desertmartin) or her mother. Since John Regan is also listed in this census and as a witness to one of her children's baptism, I think I'm on the right track.
Does anyone know how I might be able to verify this information?

Women are usually listed by their married name (unlike Scotland where they tended to keep their maiden name). Have you tried following the property in the Valuation Revision Books?

She is listed up to 1881 - 1883, then her name is crossed out and "82 down" is written in the observation column.  Any idea what that refers to?

The property consists only of a house and does not appear in the next book (1884-1898) so it would appear that the house fell or was knocked down c1882.

Well that does correspond to when her son John Lone emigrated.  There appears to be a Charles Lone living there in the 1831 census so I'm pretty sure I have the right Susan McNamee.

Have you checked for her death around that time? or looked for her in the Valuation Books in that townland or surrounding area?

I didn't look for death records for Susan McNamee because I was focused Susan Lone.  Guess I'll have to back track and look for McNamee records.
