Looking for the parents (or birthdate) of a James Thomas.

He married a Jane Arthur Fry in Barnstaple, Devon in 1878.  They later lived in Wales (1881) and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (1891) - the census' would make him born around (1853)  He died in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1923.

I can't find a viewable copy of the marriage record to find his parents names, nor a birth record.  Can anyone help?

What is his place of birth in the 1881 census? The problem with such a common name is that there are at least 15 born in each quarter.

You may have to buy his marriage certificate from the GRO.

If he was born in Barnstable there are two possibles

Births Dec 1852
Thomas    James William        Barnstaple    5b   482

Births Dec 1854   
Thomas    James        Barnstaple    5b   408

Neath is in Wales right?  Because I have the birth of a James Thomas in Cardiff, Wales in 1853.

Yes Neath is Wales but about 40 miles away from Cardiff, it's nearer Swansea. Unfortunately James Thomas is quite a common name. There are 2 born in Neath in 1853, 4 in Neath in 1852 and 2 in 1854.  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Yeah, it's just my luck I have a bunch of SUPER common names in the family.  Too bad his name wasn't Apple, or some similar celeb-baby name.  ;)

How did you find that?  I've been going through the census' for hours now looking for a John Thomas who was a dry salter.  Is there a site you can search by occupation, or do you just put it in an additional information box?
