Harvey's Grocers, Kent St, Whitstable
« on: Wednesday 22 April 15 09:22 BST (UK) »
Hello

Is anyone able to tell me who owned a grocers' shop at 35 Kent St, Whitstable after 1935?  My Gt gt gt grandmother Elizabeth Harvey owned it in the early point of the 1900's, up to her death in 1935.  I know it stayed in the family, but I don't actually know which one of her children took it on.

Would much appreciate any pointers anyone can give me.

Kelly's Directory for 1934 lists Mrs Elizabeth HARVEY, shopkeeper at 31 Essex Street, Whitstable.

Is this the same lady?

Hi Bearkat

Yes, that's her.  Don't have my information to hand, but it's quite possible that I misread 31 for 35.  I'm fairly sure they lived "over the shop"

I am afraid I am confused with this one.
Ladynicotine refers to 35 KENT Street
Bearcat refers to 31 ESSEX Street

These are both small Victorian terraced properties which dont look as if they have ever been more than a front room type shop . There doesn't appear to ever have been shop fronts on either.

The First pic is of 35 Kent St. The second of 31 Essex St. (Red Wheely Bin house)

The link I posted definitely says Essex Street.

I agree neither property looks like a shop.

I wonder if the houses have been renumbered.

It looks like Elizabeth became a Greengrocer at 31, Essex Street after she was widowed of Samuel in 1910 . So we can rule out 35 Kent Street
1901 Census shows her and the family with husband Samuel as the Publican of the Long Reach Tavern ,Borstal Hill , Whitstable
Incidentally

Hi

I've found Alfred Sydney Harvey listed in The Gazette having died 14 August 1976, living at 31 Essex Street. Occupation - Master Greengrocer (retired).

I hang my head in shame for the confusion I've caused.  :-[  Elizabeth Harvey had a shop at 31 ESSEX Street.  It's quite possible that it was nothing more than a front-room operation, & that she lived upstairs with other members of the family.  My father remembers visiting as a small boy.

Many years later, my grandmother lived at KENT Street, which I remember visiting.

Thank you everyone for your help - the information about Elizabeth's surviving children is very useful, as is the date of Alfred's death.  Bluemincepies - do you happen to know if the listing relates to potential bankruptcy's at all?  I have no reason to believe that he did go bankrupt - I simply curious about "notices of claims to be given".
