So, the plot thickens with yet more possibilities. Didn't check him; just did Monica's parents etc.  I'll have a look at this - thanks.

Meant to add that South Africa does not keep census records - except for a very few.  They are all destroyed after the data has been extracted.  The data kept does not include names or anything of relevance to anyone doing family research :(

Marriage certificates do not give the parent's names unless, by chance, they were witnesses to the wedding and even then it is a bit of a guess as they could be siblings!

Thanks for that, Nookie. Have learnt a lot doing this SA research which is one of the good things about genealogy.

Here is a list of baptisms at Cradock for various Dickens children.  Not sure whether they were Nellie's siblings or not.  Not sure where you live, but I think you can order the microfilm through your closest familysearch centre, or maybe your local library.  Unfortunately these have not been scanned yet.

Microfilm #1768520
Cradock Christenings: 1880-1903
Item 6: Index to Film #1560965, Item 17

DICKENS, Mary Walker, 729
DICKENS, Myrtle Day, 516
DICKENS, Nillie Baden Powell, 682
DICKENS, Olive Bruce, 628
DICKENS, Winifred May, 549

Thanks, Nookie. These certainly look promising. I do have the actual baptismal register cert for Nellie.
