Henry TOWNSEND, Box, Wiltshire
« on: Friday 24 April 15 22:55 BST (UK) »
I live in New Zealand & I am researching my husband's paternal gg grandparents, Henry TOWNSEND (b.1809, Box Wiltshire, d.1889, NZ) & Elizabeth (Eliza) CHADWICK (b.1810 Atworth, Wiltshire, d.? Wiltshire).
Henry emigrated to Australia & then NZ c.1859-1862. He was accompanied by 2 of his sons, James Andrew TOWNSEND & John TOWNSEND. It appears (per 1861 UK Census) that Henry's wife, Eliza, their other 2 sons, Francis Henry & Albert Edward, & their 2 daughters, Clara Maria & Sarah Sophia, did not emigrate at that stage. Francis H & Albert E. did emigrate later as they died in NZ. It's looking like the 2 daughters both died... Clara Maria d.1859 (per Devizes & Wiltshire Gazette Death Notices) & Sarah Sophia m. Alfred SHEPPARD 1861, but she then d. March Qtr 1862. I cannot find any evidence of Eliza coming to NZ & no death record in NZ.
Therefore my query is...
Could anyone find her death c. 1861-1871 for me? In 1861(per UK Census) she was living in Bradford on Avon, @ Pye Corner. I have looked at FreeUKBMD but there are number of deaths for Elizabeth TOWNSENDs in the period I'm interested in.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help.

Scott family tree on Ancestry mentions Elizabeth Chadwick (Townsend) died in 1870 in New Zealand age 60.   Her mother was Sarah.   Like you I was unable to find her death in UK and no mention after 1861.

I have seen the Scott FT info re Elizabeth's death in NZ in 1870. So far, there's no record or anecdotal evidence to verify that she came to NZ, or a death record on NZBDM. Her husband, Henry & several other family members are buried at Waikouaiti, NZ but no Elizabeth.
Yesterday I found 2 burial records for Elizabeth TOWNSENDs in 1866 & 1869, in Trowbridge, Wiltshire on Deceased Online website.

Could be promising, depending on age at death.

Until 1936, Trowbridge parish came under the Melksham Registration District.

So these look to be the deaths (on FreeBMD):

December qtr 1866
Melksham district     vol 5a, page 71

Townsend, Elizabeth     age 85

March qtr 1869
Melksham district     vol 5a, page 86

Townsend, Elizabeth     age 80
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

I saw these, but apparently she was born about 1810 according to census returns.   Her place of birth was shown as Melksham or Atworth (which is very close to Melksham).

Yes... I found those UK Free BMD entries for Elizabeth TOWNSEND deaths but discounted them because of the ages. It looks like they're the same ones I found on Deceased Online? So the mystery continues of when & where Elizabeth died. Today I found a ship passenger list for the 'Seringapatam' dep. Bristol & arr. Melbourne, Australia in Jan 1857. A Henry TOWNSEND is listed... interestingly as a single man. A Townsend cousin & I think it may be him as the age & occupation (butcher) are correct. But we thought his sons, James Andrew & John TOWNSEND emigrated with him but they aren't listed.
