Josephine Dunn (1859 - 1923)
« on: Saturday 25 April 15 00:49 BST (UK) »
 :)
I have a letter written by Jack (John Joseph) McDonald to his dad from England in 1915 during WWI. Josephine was his mother and came from Birmingham UK.
See attach: a photo of a soldier I believe to be Jack. And, bits of letters. Looking for Dunns; and, any info. His dad was Scottish and called John Joseph too.
 ;)

Hi
Josephine Dunn seems to have married John Macdonald in Sydney in 1885

Not got any more details but this seems to be her in 1881 in Aston near Birmingham
Watery Lane
William Peel 25 Bricklayer Birmingham
Martha 23 Wednesbury
Mary 7mths Birmingham
Josephine Dunn 26 sister in law tea pot maker Wednesbury Staffs.

Martha Dunn 21 married William Peel 23 bricklayer at Holy Trinity Bordesley 25.12.1877 giving addresses of 99 and 79 Sandy Lane respectively and fathers James Dunn blacksmith and James Peel  bricklayer.
Strangely this seems to be her in 1871 at Lawley St Aston
John Dunn 55 smith Clonmel Ireland
Mary 55 Kilkenny Ireland
Elizabeth 19 Wednesbury
Rose 17 Wednesbury
Martha 13 Wednesbury

Father's name has changed and no sign of Josephine.Possible GRO Martha Dunn Dec 1857 West Bromwich 6b 611 for her birth but no sign of Josephine Dunn.
Her father being John does however fit with the Australia Death Index possible death in 1923 at Redfern.

Thanks, Cinderdrinker,
I have the info re Birmingham & tea pot maker.

Thanks, Jackie,
I only have England as her place of birth; John Dunn as dad; no name of mother stated.

Very much appreciate your effort.
Is there a Family History Centre in Birmingham ?

Hi
Not sure what you mean by a Family History Centre. There are Morman libraries where you can see family history records from all over the world .That connected with the online indexes at familysearch website.
There's the Library of Birmingham which has local archives many of which have been digitized and put on the Ancestry website.

But here's what else I found about her possible family.
Sister Martha's second marriage
Married St Gabriel's 11.11.1894
Robert Hitchen 46 widower Garrison Lane s of Thomas dec bricklayer
Martha Peel widow 35 Westley St d of John blacksmith.
Possible death for Martha June 1899 Aston as Hitchings age 42 6d 176

An earlier census 1861 Meeting St Wednesbury
John Dunn 46 labourer Ireland
Mary 45 Ireland
Richard 23 son labourer Ireland
Henry 18 labourer North Shields Durham
Ann 16 house servant Ireland
Margaret 13 same Ireland
Elizabeth 11 Wednesbury
Rosanna 8 Wednesbury
Martha 4 Wednesbury

But again no Josephine.

Possible birth registration for Henry Dunn Newcastle upon Tyne June 1842 25 336 which if you bought the birth certificate would give you Mary's maiden name.No sign of one for Josephine.

Henry seems to have married at St Asaph Birmingham 30.1.1871
Henry Dunn 27 blacksmith Great Coleman St  so John blacksmith
Mary Arculus 27 same d of John brass finisher
witnesses James and Elizabeth Arculus

The sisters Margaret and Ann seem to be at Gt Barr St Aston in 1871
George Saunders 26 glass cutter Birmingham
Mary 26 clothes maker
Ellen 4
George 5mths
Ann Dunn sister (in law) 24 swim? Ireland
Margaret same 22 teapot maker Birmingham
Charles Saunders 22 brother thimble maker Birmngham
Margaret seems to marry Charles Saunders Dec 1871.

Finding it a bit difficult to track the family down I'm afraid.

Thanks, Ciderdrinker,
Perhaps - as someone suggested - Rosanna changed her name to Josephine.
