Well, well, well.  I am just blown away with what you've discovered.  Rechecking the Death cert information, I can see I completely misread/misinterpreted details and have a different and incorrect Michael Whelan.  As requested, here are the details:

My great-great-grandparents Patrick and Margaret Whelan were born born Galway.  Patrick's occupation was Blacksmith.  If this is the same family and you are still researching, I would be happy to share the information I have found.

Briefly,  Patrick Whelan married Margaret Robins Galway.  Unfortunately, I have no proper evidence  of when or where in Galway.  I first found Patrick and Margaret on the birth certificate of their son, Malachi, my g-gfather.  He was born Saint Luke (London) 1848.  Since then I've found more evidence on the 1851 census record which shows that Patrick and Margaret had two children, born Ireland living with them as well as Malachi.  1861 shows only Margaret, Widow and Malachi age 12 and two younger daughters.  The census records are difficult to read, but that is what I make of them.
Your Michael (maybe!  The name looks like Marrigire) was shown as age 20 in 1851.
These dates don't appear to tie in exactly with your Michael, but ?
Hope this all comes together, as I would love to be in touch with another Whelan descendant of Patrick and Margaret.

Oh bother, I don't think we're matched.  I have a Blacksmith apprenticeship happening for Michael in Tasmania in 1861 aged 17.  I've found 4 possibilities for a Patrick and Margaret - Dublin, Cork, Galway,  Clare!!  I just can't crack that wall!!
Thanks so much for your input and good luck.

If I am not going crazy the Death Cert says;
Died 1887 age 44 (birth c 1843)
Time in Victoria 43 years.***

So came out age 1??.
If so must have come with Parents ?

Yes, agreed on the arrival conclusions but can't locate shipping records here in Australia.  Went to NLI Dublin last year and no light on this either.  They claimed Australian (shipping) records were better.  Assume they came as steerage and no names provided.  So I'm stuck at best guess only and because of the common names, even best guess is questionable.  I have tried all I can think of and feel it will be up to someone, as mentioned above, to be looking as well who might have that elusive piece of information.
cheers,
PippaR
