Where did Laurens Eric Felldin come from?
« on: Saturday 25 April 15 22:17 BST (UK) »
Laurens Eric Fellden (sic) and Elizabeth McFarlane Waddell were married in New Monkland in 1842, and had one son, Laurens Eric Waddell Felldin, baptised 25 September 1843 in Gorbals.

Laurens Sr must have died before 1847, because his widow married James Taylor, a master wright from Cumbrae. They had a son John Waddell Taylor, and in 1851 James, Elizabeth and John were living at 33 Clyde Street, Glasgow. Laurens (listed as Larence Waddell) was with his maternal grandmother Elizabeth Craig in Airdrie.

Elizabeth died in 1855. According to her death certificate Laurens Sr was a sailor.

Laurens Jr was a physician and surgeon. He married Jeanie Parlane Ross in Glasgow in 1867, and they had one daughter, Agnes, who died in early childhood. According to Laurens Jr's marriage certificate, Laurens Sr was a captain in the mercantile marine.

Laurens Jr died in County Durham in 1899, and his widow died in 1919.

What I cannot find is any other reference to Laurens Sr - where and when was he born; where, when and how did he die? Was he perhaps of Scandinavian origin?

Have you looked at the SP Testaments, Forfarian?

1845 L E Fellden of Paterson St, Kingston, Glasgow.  It's only a one page Inventory, but at least it gives an address.

Thanks, I had intended to look at the will but I'll take a look next time I am in the National Archives. As you say, it provides an address and a date.

No help with your original enquiry, but another snippet that you may not have come across was that Laurens placed a notice in the Glasgow Herald in March 1845 stating that his wife had deserted the family and he wouldn't be responsible for her future debts or such. His address was 6 Salisbury Street.

Now that, thank you very much, is very interesting indeed. So he was alive in March 1845, and his will was confirmed later the same year.

Am now wondering why that didn't come up when I searched the British Newspaper Collection, which includes the Glasgow Herald!

Thank you. I did find that one, after posting my query.

Still don't know where he came from, however.
