Hi all, dragging my heals a bit as I have been busy today, but will look into it tomorrow.  My first thoughts are that James and Catherine, which is my line are not the same line as Jen has outlined, but I will try to check it out tomorrow.

Hi All,

Having reviewed, checked and checked again, I tend to agree with Jen that the 1803 Alexander could be the brother of my 1799 James, with parents William and Isabel Scott; however, James' DC shows his father as a 'ploughman', which doesn't really fit in with being a shore porter or innkeeper, so I'm really not sure.  I feel another spend with ScotlandsPeople coming on.

Jen, where do you fit in with your Jolly's?.  My connection goes back to Fettercairn too via the Betsy Jane Jolly marriage to David Dakers in 1867.

I have James Jolly = Anne Christie, James being the son of David Jolly = Isabella Stuart, with David being the son of John Jolly = Margaret Young.  Is this like your research?

Hi Roger

Have a look again at post #16...

William Daker and Isabella Scott's son Alexander b. 1803 is the one showing as a shore porter and in later years before his death, as innkeeper. From Alexander's death, in 1860 I think it was, his father William showed as having been an agricultural labourer which is why I thought it fitted well with what showed on your James' details on his death, altough lacking confirmation on his mother's name. Isabel featured in the early naming too of James' children.

Hi Monica,

Thanks for that, I guess I messed up on that one, swapping between emails and programmes must have given me a senior moment (or two), so i would be more convinced now that Alexander and James were brothers, both the sons of William and Isabella.

Same dad different moms? At reply#29 that birth at Familysearch is spot on for age and place of birth - Monikie. Also, James's birth date from the census shows he was born before William and Isabella married in 1801.

My interest - In a vain attempt to discover the background of my much discussed Captain David Jolly (feel free to yawn everyone) I have tried to make sense of all the Jolly's on the 1841 census living Kincardineshire (I have yet to do Angus). Currently, I have 3 Fettercairn, 3 Arbuthnott, 2 Marykirk, 2 Lawrencekirk, 1 Garvock and 1 Fordoun family groups. Your John and Margaret Young (Fettercairn group 1) had a son William born 1794 a bit young for the one I'm looking for but still in the mix until I can eliminate him.

Anyways, Captain Jolly's son William had 10 children - the youngest, Arthur married Elizabeth Dakers.  John married Betsy McLennan - her dad was a lighthouse keeper - presumably the one at Scurdie Ness. David (my great grandfather) married into the Johnstons of Edzell who lived next door to the Reverend Inglis, brother to Charlotte Brand whose husband committed suicide in Cork which resulted in my Captain taking over the Countess of Airlie! I'm not making this up - honest!

Jen,

I think you may be right in there being a second marriage for William, it would seem that his first marriage could have been to Ann Duncan who died a couple of months after James was born.  James was the youngest of 6 kids, with 3 more to Isobel.  William and Ann moved around Angus a bit.

Maxwell married Agnes Evans and they had 6 kids also.

Off on holiday now for a while, so searching will take a back seat for the rest if the month.

Regards

Enjoy the break Roger.

Had a wee peek at some trees on Ancestry (I must be getting desperate) and there appears to be a number of people who think Robert (him of the accidental drowning in 1898- son of James Jolly and Ann Christie) was married to a Jessie and had six children (that includes three born after 1898  :o).

In fact the Robert Jolly married to the Jessie (Burnett) with the six (soon to become eight) children is the son of Margaret Jolly daughter of the Captain  ;).
