Alexander Ross JACK
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 07:35 BST (UK) »
A R Jack was b 21 Dec 1883, birth reg at Lanark Lanarkshire. I have the Certificate, he was
illegitimate mother's name Maggie Jack who registered the birth.

1891 census finds him with his Grandmother Margaret Jack and Uncle Lewis Jack, as a scholar 7 yrs at 12 Russell Place Anderston. Birthplace given as Lanark Lanarkshire.

1901 census is not obvious, I have found an Alexander Jack 16 yrs (age is out) at Dunoon Convalescent Sea Side Homes Manse Road Dunoon App blacksmith as a patient with 57 others. However, his birthplace is given as Govan Lanarkshire, so perhaps it's not him.

I can't find a marriage or death for him, in spite of taking shares out in scotlandspeople.

I have searched the CWGC database for him but can't see him.

I really need some more eyes to look for him, if someone could help I would be grateful :D

Cheers

Joy
Edit to add, Maggie Jack died in 1923 and the death was registered by her sister Eliza Jack McVicar,
so perhaps he wasn't around :-\

Have you searched under Alexander Ross? Often illegitimate children used either parent's surname. It was common for them to have their father's surname as a middle name when registered under their mum's maiden name. Have you searched the 1911 census? To eliminate the one found in 1901 you'll need to search for him in earlier censuses.

Thanks flst for your reply. The only other census he is in is the 1891 with his

Grandmother and Uncle at 7 yrs. I can't find him in the 1911 census. I have searched under 'Ross'

but nothing jumped out and said "Aha!"

So there you have it...I'll just keep plugging away and perhaps I'll get lucky ;D

Many thanks

Hi Joy,
I think he might be living at 40, Argyll Street, Dunoon & Kilmun, Dunoon, Argyllshire, Scotland.
Alexander K (top of the R missing) Jack, 17, printer, born Lanark - he's with his mom Maggie (born Banffshire).

Hi Joy,
That was from a transcription at FindMyPast bit more of a challenge to find him under 'Tack'....

Hi grandmother Margaret was wife of a Lewis Jack - in 1861 they have a daughter Margaret be. 1850 Fardice, Banffshire so this fits with Maggie Tack found 1901.

Should it read Fordyce? I suggest Joy now searches the 1911 census on scotlandspeople for Alexander. There are a few who could be him.
