John Arbuthnot Home
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 13:38 BST (UK) »
Need help with this please.

John was born about 1825 in Edinburgh. Found him in 1841, married in 1846 and in 1851 census. Also found children born up to 1854.
John worked in HM Chancery office Edinburgh and appears in Edinburgh directories until 1855/56. Cannot find him on any later censuses or any death certificate. Wife recorded as "w" in 1861.

His death is recorded on a family gravestone again in Edinburgh with no dates of death etc.

Apparently a family member 50 year ago heard he died in Venezuela! Person is now dead.

Can anyone help or suggest anything that could help find date and place of death.

thanks

A

Hello Alan,

SP have a death in the Minor Records, Overseas Foreign, 1882 John Arbuthnot Home, aged 25.  Possibly he is a son of the man you are looking for and the one who died in Venezuela?

Ah, Your John Arbuthnot Home was a military man!

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C12749409

Reference:   WO 69/143/357
Description:   Statements of Service, Royal Artillery 7 Battalion Numbers 3422 to 3897.
This entry appears on opening 390; this number is imprinted at the top right of each opening.
Soldier's Number 3777: John Arbuthnot HOME. Born High Church, Edinburgh, Midlothian. Enlisted 1854 aged 24 years. Note: Transferred to 12 Battalion 1855.
Covering dates indicate enlistment year. Date: 1854

Added:  Something not quite right with the dates here, Alan.  John Arbuthnot Home married Margaret McNeillie 1843 Edinburgh (from the Edinburgh grave stone, I think this is the one you're looking for).  But if the same person was 24 in 1854 when he enlisted???

Hi thank you for your posts.

John did marry Margaret McNeillie you are correct. The one in 1882 is not him I looked at at that.

I am beginning to wonder if he ran off and joined up- assumiing this is the same one. It looks like it given the relatively unusual middle name?

He is is the 1841 census aged 16 and in 1851 at home with Margaret aged 26. If he is in the army maybe he died abroad - Crimea war was on in 1850's or elsewhere?
