McLarty family Ayrshire, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 14:29 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
Have been researching my paternal grandfather's family history. He was Robert McLarty born in 1903 in Dalmellington. His mother was Mary McCutcheon McLarty born in 1882. I was amazed to find that Mary had 12 siblings - Elizabeth, David, Isabella,George, Barbara, Janet, James, Nicholas, Samuel, Agnes, Malcolm and Jean - all younger than her. The family lived mainly in Dalmellington although also in Straiton. Mary herself married William A Mcturk and settled in Maybole.
I wondered if anyone else has looked at the McLarty family? There must be a lot of McLarty decendants still in Ayrshire.
Thanks and regards.

Hi my Grandad was Malcolm McLarty which would of been Marys brother, Malcolm was born in Dalmellington in1906.  Malcolm married Helen Steele and they lived in Dalmellington all their days.  Mary and Malcolms parents were Nicholas Mccutheon and Samuel Mclarty.

Regards

Hello - thank you so much for replying. If I've worked it out right your grandfather Malcolm was my great great uncle! It's funny to think that my Grandpa Robert was Malcolm's nephew even though Robert was 3 years older than him, but Nicholas and Samuel were quite prolific in babymaking it seems!! Mary had Robert out of wedlock so he would've been brought up in his very early years with the rest of the McLartys in Dalmellington. She married into the McTurk family when he was 5 eventually moving to a farm in Maybole. Robert had three half siblings (the elder girl was named Nicholas) but kept the name Mclarty. My Dad was Robert's eldest child, William, and I was a McLarty too till I married. Growing up, I only ever met the Mcturks and no other McLartys as Mary had died before I was born, which is why I'm researching the family history.
My grandpa lived in Ayr as far back as I remember and my Dad was from there too. I 'm from Hamilton but now live in Glasgow!! It's great to hear from a distant relative.
With best wishes and thanks. :)

Hi

I am descendant of a Marion McLarty (b.1833 in Ayr), whose parents were Malcolm McLarty and Janet Duncan.

I am currently working on McLarty family tree and have found one of Marion's brother's James went to Straiton.

The names Malcolm, Samuel, David keep cropping up as I have seen from your posts, so think we maybe connected somehow!

Happy and interested to compare notes!

Hi,
Thank you for your reply to my posts.
I think you're right that we're connected somehow! The Samuel Mclarty in my family history had parents named James and Elizabeth. James was born to Malcolm and Janet and had siblings, one of whom was Marion. They lived in High Street, Ayr. By the 1851 census, James has a young family of his own and Marion is living with her Mother (Malcolm presumably has died) and working as a dressmaker. Does this sound like your Marion?
Have still got a lot of delving to do and i keep getting sidetracked by other branches of my family. Would be nice to compare notes though. I still have family in Ayr,
I look forward to your reply.

Hello
I am not a McLarty but trying to find what happened to a Malcolm McLarty, born c 1823 in Ayr who emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand in 1842.  I have found some references to a Duncan McLarty who lived in the Waikato area but he was clearly a different and younger man, born c1839.  Cannot find any information about Malcolm.  Does anyone know where he went or what became of him?
Would really appreciate any information

Thank you!
