I've re-posted this from the Common Room because 4 months on I am none the wiser.
In censuses he is down as being born in Hexham.  Father Thomas married mother? Jane Dawson in 1839, three years after his birth. Was she the mother? - he may have been born as James Dawson, or was he from his father's previous relationship/marriage?
All help appreciated.

First of all do you know if Thomas Crawford was a bachelor or a widower when he married Jane Dawson?

Sorry I don't know the area but is Longhoughton anywhere near?

Baptism 16 Feb 1836
James Crawford
father Thomas Crawford
mother Margaret

which would indicate a previous marriage for Thomas

otherwise as you say he may have been James Dawson born to Jane before she married or she in turn had a previous marriage - oh dear lots of possibilities  :-\

Who is James with in 1841?  I can't see him with "parents" if I am looking at the right couple

hi millipede,

Longhoughton is about 55 miles from Hexham via A69 &A1.
Alnwick is about 4 miles away from Longhoughton, which is nearer the coast.

Sorry I haven't replied. I have been out and just come back. I don't know about his marital status, but Thomas's father's name was John and Jane's father Richard. the Jarrow census looks probable

That's the problem.  All the censuses say that he was born in Hexham. I suppose that he could have been born in Hexham and baptised in South Shields. Perhaps they got married in a different church in South Shields because of the baby being born out of wedlock and they didn't want the vicar to know about their 3 year old child.
