William Meredith - Cowpen
« on: Thursday 30 April 15 16:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information on William Meredith from Cowpen.  I believe that sometime after WW1 the villagers of Cowpen presented William with a gold watch in appreciation of his courage in the war.  He fought with the Tyneside Irish in France.  He was awarded the DCM and the MM.

Any information would be much appreciated.

I don't know if you have seen the tree on ancestry or even if it is your own but it does show a bit more information.
William Meredith married Evelyn Muriel Butcher.  He was born 12/4/1911 and died in Strathfield Australia 5/9/1990.

But the William Meredith in question served in WW1 and was awarded a gallantry medal  :-\

I believe that sometime after WW1 the villagers of Cowpen presented William with a gold watch in appreciation of his courage in the war.

The presentation of the watch was in late January 1918.

What information do you have about William - date of birth, for instance?

You say he was from Cowpen, but at the moment I can't find the birth of a William Meredith of a suitable age in Northumberland  :-\

I have just found out about William from a newspaper cutting I found whilst researching someone else and found out they lived at the same address in Atherton.  I know he definitely lived in Atherton/Tyldesley, Lancs my GGrandad I think, was his brother, that has still to be determined though.  He won't have been born in Cowpen, as far as I know he was born in Wales.  Certainly that is where the family came from.
