Charles Mitchell - Shop in Bury St Edmunds
« on: Friday 01 May 15 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I'm looking for information about businesses belonging to my Great-Great-Grandfather.

Charles (Otley) Mitchell was born in Long Melford in 1865 and was a licensed hawker until he got his own shop in the 1890s/1900s, which I think was in Raingate Street in Bury St Edmunds.

In the late 1910s I believe he also became the licensee of the Coach and Horses pub on Honey Hill in Bury St Edmunds.

His son (my great grandfather) Henry Charles Mitchell was an oil delivery man in Bury St Edmunds in the 50s/60s.

I'd love to know if anyone has photographs/information about Charles’ businesses or memories of Henry Charles. I’m particularly curious about what was sold in the shop.

There's a rather lovely photograph of Charles' wife Amelia Jane Mitchell nee Devereux, with her daughter Ada, on Familysearch (https://familysearch.org/photos/images/13649413/) and I wondered if anyone had any of Charles himself.

Thanks in advance! :)

What sort of google searches have you tried?

No picture on here, but gives you some idea of what is being compiled:

Thank for the links, they're really helpful. My Gt-Gt-Grandfather is mentioned as being the publican/resident in 1916 :)

I've tried lots of different searches starting with people, street, and pub names and more general things like "bury st edmunds victorian" "bury st edmunds 19th century"...

Thanks again!

Kelly's directories?
e.g.

http://cdm16445.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p16445coll4/id/218246

Thanks again. I have already checked those directories and did find him but he's only listed as 'shopkeeper' with no further info.

Hi

I think we are possibly 4th cousin 2x removed.

The link between us seems to involve this Charles Otley Mitchell.

I think his father could be an Elliston rather than Elijah Otley.

Are you aware of any Elliston link?

Thanks.
